I have used Turo plenty of times and this experience may have me rethinking the app. We picked up the vehicle fine although it was slightly confusing as it wasn’t totally clear on how to get the shuttle stop or what shuttle to take. I went straight from the airport to the hotel about 25 minutes away. After about an hour I went across the street to get food and notice the low tire pressure light was on. Not thinking much of it (weather related maybe) I parked the car around 5pm for the rest of the night. The next morning I go to leave for breakfast and the remote wouldn’t open and the tire was flat to the ground. I contacted the host who responded quickly that he would send someone out to look at the key and the tire. They ended up having to jump the battery and told me that I left the ceiling light on (untrue I was never in the car at night) I needed to turn the AUTOMATIC lights off every time (didn’t make sense but not my car so I just followed instructions). Additionally the mechanic put air in the tire and said it was fine, I stated I didn’t think it was and should fully check it but he didn’t he just said it was fine. There was a language barrier so I couldn’t get a clear answer as to why it was going flat. This is all within the first 1/2 a day. Throughout the next 24 hours I had to put air in the tire at least 6 more times. I reached out to the vehicle owner and all calls and messages went unanswered. Because this was such an inconvenience to my trip and the owner did not respond, I contacted Turo. Turo was extremely unhelpful and stated because I didn’t have a picture of the dash light I was responsible for the tire. I explained to them that the light goes off everytime the tire is inflated to the correct pressure and it’s very possible and probable that the owner put the air in right before the car was dropped off for pickup, hence why the warning didn’t appear until about 3 hours after I picked the vehicle up. Turo was able to contact the owner who insisted that the vehicle was “inspected” and everything was fine. They gave me 3 options:
1. Put the donut on - which I do not know how to do and didn’t feel comfortable driving my children around in a car with a donut on
2. Work with Turo to resolve for at least $100 which may include having to end the current booking and book a new vehicle - something I did not have time to do while on vacation
3. Take it to a shop to get it looked at - which was impossible because at this point the tire was completely flat.
I was able to find a mobile person who could come look at it and they found 3 NAILS throughout the tire! This service cost $130 and when I communicated that the owner essentially stated that I should have did what he said and again accused me of not taking care of the vehicle which was a complete lie.
The vehicle interior and exterior are both in very used condition which is hard to tell from the pictures posted. While “clean” the interior has a lot of staining in the ceiling and cigarettes burns on both the front and back seats.
I believe that owners are responsible for being truthful about vehicle conditions and I don’t believe that happened with this trip. I kept the car because I needed transportation and our schedule did not afford me the time to return and pick up a new vehicle, but if I were able to I would have done that. The stress of trying to ensure my children have a good time but also knowing I will probably walk out to a flat tire and have to find air in a city I was unfamiliar with caused me a lot of anxiety.
Also there is an undisputed Apple AirTag in the driver’s side door which made me extremely uncomfortable knowing someone had me and my children’s location at all times without my consent.
