This was my first time renting through Turo, and unfortunately, I had an issue.
Shortly after I picked up the vehicle, I received a voicemail from the host informing me that both rear tires needed air. I was probably a block away. That immediately raised concerns because I was about to begin a six-hour road trip. I added air to the tires and continued my trip. Had I known that I could have called Turo right then and there and they would have helped me find another car. I didn’t know this until the next day.
I arrived at my destination and later driving to get dinner, I noticed that one tire's pressure had dropped to 16 PSI. This was alarming and made me feel unsafe. I added air again and immediately messaged the host. After receiving no response for almost an hour, I contacted Turo for assistance. This was at 9:00 pm when I messaged the host. I waited maybe 45 min to an hour and no response . Turo asked if I had attempted to contact the host, which I had. The agent told me that he would try and they then reached out to her directly.
When the host finally responded, she suggested the previous renter may have run over a nail and asked me to have the tire inspected. This disrupted my travel plans and took valuable time out of my trip. I had to get the tire checked as I was worried about getting home safely. She also told me that in the future I should contact the host instead of Turo because Turo is strict and could potentially blacklist hosts. However, I had already attempted to contact her first and only called Turo because I received no response.
The following morning, I took the vehicle to Walmart to have the tire checked. The technician determined that the tire could not be repaired and needed to be replaced at a cost of $122.80. The host paid for the replacement immediately, which I appreciated. However, this entire situation could likely have been avoided if the vehicle had been properly inspected before being handed over to me.
The host stated that she had recently checked the tires and that they were fine. However, if that were the case, it is difficult to understand why she called me immediately after pickup to tell me the rear tires needed air. The tire pressure warning signs were clearly already an issue before I began my trip.
While I appreciate that the host reimbursed the tire replacement cost, I do not believe the vehicle was in a condition that should have been rented out for a long-distance trip. As a first-time Turo customer, this experience was stressful, inconvenient, and concerning from a safety standpoint.
