This car is an absolute blast and the fact that it exists in 2026 has restored my faith in new cars. It is so choice, if you have the means I definitely recommend picking one up, if not rent this one.
The controls fall easy to hand and foot, the steering wheel is tidy but communicative and predictable. The pedals are well placed, clutch uptake is easy, and both brake and accelerator are progressive and intuitive. Every shift is a rewarding experience with bolt action like precision. The front mid engine layout gives the car such outstanding handling. It is so much fun to drive. Even at slow speeds it is great fun. While driving this car I learned there is truth to the saying: ‘Miata is always the answer’.
The cabin well appointed but has minimal distractions. Touch screens and haptic buttons are noticeably absent, all controls are well placed buttons and knobs, providing the driver with the refreshing ability to control anything necessary without taking their eyes off the road.
The engine in the MX-5 is not the main event but it is certainly not an afterthought. It’s not excessively powerful but it is peppy, fun, and eager at acceptable speeds. It’s capable of reving to 7000rpm and still pulls healthily all the way up. Though the twin cam four banger doesn’t have the most exotic soundtrack, it is sporty enough and it doesn’t sound terrible. Driving with the top down was such a delight. Even at highway speeds with the top down passengers can converse at a reasonable volume and don’t feel like they’re being bombasted with wind.
The only drawback to the MX-5 is luggage space. To my dismay, I could only fit one carry on luggage in the trunk. Two travelers will either have to pack into one bag or be contented to drive with the second bag precariously balanced on the passengers lap.
On the whole the driving experience with this MX-5 was superb. The car was clean, well taken care of, and as advertised. The owner was communicative, pickup and drop off were easy. I would without a doubt rent from them again. I was sad to drop the car off because it was truly such a delight to drive.
