Top tips for renting a car in Sarnia

If you're feeling anxious about driving in a new city, you're not alone. These hints and tips will help newcomers to Sarnia feel comfortable driving a car rental:

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Sarnia?

Travelling from the United States? Remember that as soon as you enter Canada, the road signs switch to the metric system, so speed limits are measured in kilometres, not miles. The default speed limit around Sarnia is 50 km/h, but it drops to 30 km/h in school zones. In winter, snow and ice can affect driving conditions, so winter tyres are strongly recommended.

What is parking like in Sarnia?

Visitors to Sarnia often comment on how good the city's parking facilities are. In the downtown core, you’ll find a mix of free and paid options, with both on-street spaces and municipal lots available. Even during busy times of day, spaces are usually easy to find, so renting a car here doesn’t mean worrying about parking.

Are there toll roads in Sarnia?

Yes. The Blue Water Bridge, which links Sarnia with Port Huron in Michigan, is a tolled crossing. Drivers must pay a fee to use the bridge in either direction, with the amount depending on the type of vehicle and the direction of travel. This is the only tolled route in the Sarnia area, so once you’re in the city, you won’t encounter tolls on local roads.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Sarnia?

Yes. Gas stations are easy to find throughout Sarnia, both downtown and along the main roads leading in and out of the city. The EV charging network has also grown quickly, with both Level 2 and fast chargers available at shopping centres, public lots and some hotels. If you’re renting an electric car in Sarnia, you should have no trouble finding a charge point, especially around the downtown core.

Do I need to rent a car in Sarnia?

Yes. Renting a car in Sarnia is definitely the easiest way to get around. Public transport is limited, and with the city so far from Toronto, buses and trains aren’t very practical. Booking a vehicle on Turo makes it much simpler to explore the waterfront and take day trips into the surrounding countryside. If you plan to cross the Blue Water Bridge into Michigan, a rental car lets you set your own schedule and stop at viewpoints along the way.
