How it works

Vehicle protection for hosts

purple car illustration

All trips in Canada come standard with $2,000,000* in third-party liability insurance issued to Turo under policies from Economical Insurance Company and ICBC. Protection plans offer reimbursement for physical damage and theft — the level of protection varies with the plan you choose. For physical damage reimbursements, hosts are responsible for the deductible amount, which varies by plan, and then Turo would reimburse the rest of the eligible repairs up to the actual cash value of the car, or $150,000, whichever is the lesser amount.** Protection varies depending on when damage occurs and the province in which the trip begins.

With each plan, you’ll earn a percentage of the total trip price, and be responsible for different deductible levels. When choosing a protection plan, remember that the higher the percentage of the trip price you earn, the higher the deductible and the less reimbursements amounts that are available to you.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my vehicle gets into an accident?

In the rare case that your car is involved in an accident, your guest should report it immediately by calling our customer support team at 1888 391 0460. If you notice damage at the end of the trip, please report it immediately at https://turo.com/resolutions.

To ensure eligibility for reimbursement under a protection plan, hosts must:

  • Report damage within 24 hours of the end of the trip. A Turo associate will then reach out and guide you through the process.
  • Take clear photos to document the vehicle condition at the start and end of each trip. Use the in-app check-in and checkout features to take and upload the photos.***
  • Check that guests have a valid license that matches the name on the booking.

Why don’t I get to keep 100% of the trip price?

The percentage of the trip price that Turo retains helps Turo run the marketplace smoothly and covers:

  • The costs Turo incurs for assuming the financial responsibility for potential damage to your vehicle during a trip.
  • Other expenses, including operational costs to run the platform, as well as marketing and advertising costs to help drive demand and promote hosts’ cars.

Do I need my own vehicle insurance?

Yes, you still need your own insurance for your vehicle.

Because protection plans offered through Turo cover trips booked on Turo only, you are still required to carry your own insurance in order to comply with the law.

Although your personal insurance will not be used during a Turo trip, please contact your broker as your personal insurer must approve your participation in peer-to-peer car sharing. Most major auto insurers allow their policyholders to participate in car sharing, such as Intact, Desjardins, Aviva, Wawanesa, Co-operators, and more. You can find the full list here.

The protection plan will act as primary coverage for damage that occurs during a trip. Your own insurance — which likely has an exclusion for coverage when you engage in car sharing — should not be affected.

If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to us at support.turo.com or talk to your insurance professional.

* Economical and ICBC provide physical damage and liability insurance in Canada. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply.

** Delivery period begins when the host or designee, who is a Turo-approved driver, departs to actively deliver the car to the delivery address and ends when the car arrives at the delivery address. Please refer to the Economical and ICBC insurance policies for more information. Although there is no protection under the plans offered on Turo during the delivery period in British Columbia, a host’s existing ICBC policy provides coverage.

If you have your own commercial rental insurance

If you’re a rental car company looking to share your fleet via Turo, you can waive this host protection plan and provide your own commercial rental insurance to your guests for a bigger piece of the pie.

Hosts who choose to provide their own commercial insurance, often small car rental companies, waive all insurance and protections — including liability insurance, physical damage reimbursement, and roadside assistance — but earn 80% of the trip price.

Glossary
Deductible

We use the word deductible to mean the amount you are responsible for in the event of physical damage to your vehicle caused by you during the delivery period.

For instance, if your guest has an accident while driving your car and the eligible damage costs to your car is $7,500, and you chose the 85 plan, you’d be responsible for the first $2,000 of damages, and Turo would pick up the remaining $5,500. If the damage cost to your car is $1,000, you’d be responsible for the entire damage bill unless you resolve the claim directly with your guest.

Exterior wear and tear

Wear and tear is damage occurring from the normal use of your vehicle. Protection plans on Turo do not include exterior wear and tear reimbursement, including dings, dents, cracks, or scratches to the exterior body of the vehicle that are three inches in diameter or less. The plans do not include reimbursement for interior wear and tear.

Host take

The “host take” is the percentage of the trip price you earn from each Turo trip with your car, after the costs of your protection plan (including the Turo platform fee) and the Turo take of any Extras offered are deducted.

For instance, if you chose the 75 plan, then you would pocket 75% of each trip price. The remaining 25% would help the platform run smoothly, and covers the costs Turo incurs for taking on the financial responsibility for any potential damage to your vehicle, and other expenses, including the operational costs to run the platform, as well as marketing and advertising costs to drive demand (see “Turo take” below.)

Liability coverage

Third-party liability insurance protects hosts from legal exposure for claims of bodily injury or property damage to a third party (meaning something or someone else) that may occur during a guest’s trip with your car.

For instance, if a guest hits a parked car when driving your car, you would be covered up to $2,000,000 by the liability insurance policy provided by Economical Insurance Company or ICBC for any claims made by the owner of the parked car. See the “Physical damage” section to learn about reimbursement for damage to your car.

Loss of hosting income

Loss of hosting income is payment for the possible earnings that you might have lost due to reimbursable damage to your vehicle. Our protection plans do not cover loss of hosting income.

Physical damage

The host protection plans in Canada address the allocation of financial responsibility for physical damage to your car during the trip. Physical damage protection applies to your vehicle in the event of a collision (when two vehicles hit each other or when a single vehicle hits an object) and comprehensive events (theft, fire, animal impacts, vandalism, falling objects, etc.) during the trip and is subject to terms and exclusions.

Hosts in the supported provinces are covered up to $150,000 in physical damage coverage up to the actual cash value of the car for any event that qualifies as a covered peril. Hosts in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland are covered during the reservation and delivery periods under the host protection plan provided by Economical Insurance. Hosts in British Columbia are covered during the reservation period only.

Reimbursement for replacement vehicle

Included in the 75 plan only, Turo reimburses hosts for costs incurred by booking alternate transportation while their car is in the shop due to damage that occurred during a guest’s trip with their car. Hosts on the 75 plan could get reimbursed up to $75 per day to compensate them for the inconvenience of being without their primary vehicle.

Turo take

The “Turo take” is the percentage of the trip price that Turo retains to help it run the marketplace smoothly, and covers the costs Turo incurs for taking on the financial responsibility for any potential damage to your vehicle, and other expenses, including the operational costs to run the platform, as well as marketing and advertising costs to drive demand.

* Intact and ICBC provide physical damage and liability insurance in Canada. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply.

Reservation period consists of the time the guest has possession of the vehicle. A more detailed definition of the reservation period may vary depending on the insurer. Please refer to the Intact and ICBC insurance policies for more information.
