TLDR

Purple squiggle

Owning a car in 2025 is more expensive than ever — and the rising cost of living is pushing Canadians, especially younger generations, to explore alternatives.

That’s one of the insights uncovered from Turo’s fourth annual Car Ownership Index, conducted in partnership with Leger.

On average, Canadian car owners now spend $5,497 per year — a 9% increase since 2024 — and that number is expected to climb even higher, with tariffs and inflation poised to drive up costs further.

Across the country, regional costs vary widely, but the financial strain is felt coast to coast. For many, the traditional car ownership model no longer makes financial or practical sense.

Car sharing as an alternative

As car ownership becomes more costly, Canadians are rethinking what mobility really means, and turning to more flexible, affordable alternatives.

48% of surveyed young Canadians say they’d rather pay for a car only when they need it.
No surprise, considering the average car sits unused 95%* of the time!

That’s where Turo comes in.

For those who still need access to a vehicle, it offers a way to offset the cost. Turo hosts can make over $3,500** in earnings during summer months.

No better time to start your hosting journey and make the most out of summer demand!

The survey was conducted by Leger for Turo Canada, between the dates of December 4th to 14th, 2024. The web survey was conducted among a representative sample of 1,500 English and/or French-speaking Canadians, 25 years of age or older. For comparison purposes, a probability sample of 1,500 respondents would have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percent, 19 times out of 20.
