Top-earning cars on Turo

Tapping into the Turo Carculator to rank the vehicles with the best return on investment

The best bang for your buck

Over 350,000 vehicles have been listed on Turo to help hosts offset the cost of ownership. Many Turo hosts list their cars so they can cover their monthly payments, while others simply want help managing insurance and maintenance costs. Enthusiasts often use Turo as an opportunity to buy cars that may have otherwise been out of their price range. Still others turn a profit by sharing their car when they’re not using it — many vehicles pay for themselves in just a matter of days.

To find out which vehicles are the best to share on Turo, we pored over the data we have accrued after completing six million booked days on the marketplace — data we used to power the Turo Carculator, a new tool that car owners can use to estimate what their vehicle could earn on Turo. We then analyzed the performance of all vehicles on Turo and ranked the top models by their potential return on investment.

For comparison’s sake, we’ve split all vehicles on the Turo marketplace into five categories, ranking the top three cars in each category by comparing their average monthly earnings to the estimated monthly payment. While these figures apply to the US only and do not account for costs like maintenance and personal insurance, they give a sound idea of how well each car covers its own cost on Turo. You can also see what your own car could earn for you by entering your make and model into the Carculator.

The Jeep® Wrangler takes the crown

The best-performing models on Turo earn over double their estimated monthly payments on average, and can also cover their monthly payment when booked for as little as one week each month. When you compare average earnings and the estimated monthly payment, the best car to share on Turo is the Jeep Wrangler!

A base model Wrangler can pay for itself in just over five days each month, the best mark for any model on the Turo marketplace. The silver and bronze medals go to the Ford Mustang and Fiat 500. Like most of the top-ranked models, the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Mustang, and Fiat 500 are relatively affordable to own and enjoy high demand from guests. Indeed, cars in the Daily Drivers category score the highest average for return on investment, thanks to the low cost of ownership and the high usage rate that comes with lower daily prices.

These models are affordable to own and tend to secure both frequent bookings and longer trips, which is great news for hosts who share them.

3Porsche Boxster$87$1,36513.46.81.8x

Among all sports cars on Turo, the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, and Porsche Boxster take the top spots. The Mustang and Camaro’s presence here is no great revelation, as they are two of the most affordable and recognizable sports cars for what they offer. These iconic pony cars are especially popular with international visitors who want to experience the States in a stylish American car.

The more pricey Porsche Boxster is, however, a surprise player. One explanation is that people want the Porsche driving experience and choose the open-top Boxster for its approachability to casual drivers. It’s also the lowest-priced Porsche model on Turo, even though the Porsche Cayman and Boxster start at around the same price at the dealership. Notably, the Boxster has the second-highest total earnings of all vehicles on Turo, averaging over $1,300 per month across the US. The highest-earning vehicle on Turo? The Tesla Model X.

A note about Teslas: the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X are understandably popular on Turo, commanding high daily prices and generating significant earnings for hosts. An extended test drive through Turo is the best way to get the Tesla ownership experience short of actually buying one. As this analysis doesn’t account for savings on maintenance costs, gas, and clean-air vehicle tax rebates, Tesla models’ hefty price tags keep them off the podium.

3BMW 3 Series$69$66414.59.31.4x

Each of the three big German luxury brands are represented in the Luxury category. The Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, and BMW 3 Series are all found at reasonable daily prices, considering their badges. As each takes around 10 days or less to cover their cost, cars like these are prime options for people who leverage Turo to afford more expensive cars than they would otherwise buy. If you can own a BMW 3 Series for the cost of a mid-market sedan, why not?

3Ford Escape$52$588178.71.7x

Among all trucks and SUVs, two Jeeps claim the top spots. The Jeep Wrangler and the Jeep Cherokee both have relatively low cost of ownership and have long been two of the most popular vehicles on Turo. The roomy SUVs are great for road trips, and are wieldy enough to be useful in any part of the country during any season. They’re well-suited for Southern California beach outings, ski trips in the Rocky Mountains, or weekends in the big city.

2Nissan Quest$66$545149.41.4x
3Chrysler Town & Country$64$52612111.3x

The vans category easily has the fewest models, and the rankings are tightly grouped. The Dodge Grand Caravan, Nissan Quest, and Chrysler Town and Country all fare better than pricier minivans like the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey, but not by much. Demand for minivans among guests may depend more on factors like price, location, and availability, and less on brand name or driving characteristics.

Methodology

This analysis uses data from the year November 1, 2017 to October 30, 2018 for all active vehicles model year 2012 and newer with at least five completed trips and a typical approval rating or higher. Only models with enough units meeting these requirements made the cut, resulting in a population of about 70 of the most common models on Turo.

For each model, earnings per month was calculated using the average daily price and average days booked per month, factoring in the 25% take rate from the Turo Standard protection package. The figures displayed are representative of typical performance, but Carculator results and actual earnings may vary by individual vehicle, host, market area, season, and other factors.

Estimates for the monthly payments are based on the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the base 2016 model when new, with a 72-month term and 4.75% APR. Monthly payment figures are approximate and may vary from actual monthly payments.
