Top tips for renting a van in Los Angeles

Whether you're taking loved ones to a theme park, need extra space for cargo on a beach trip, or you're just packing up to visit the famous Porto's bakery, if you're not used to a van, you might need to get acclimated. With that in mind, here are some tips for getting the most out of your rental van in Los Angeles.

Tips for driving a van in Los Angeles

If you've never driven a van before, make sure that you take it slow. Different van sizes are easier to manipulate than others, and you'll want to account for the added height as you go beneath underpasses.

The extra room in a van makes it easy to travel comfortably, but your larger vehicle needs increased space on the road for safety.

Allow for longer braking, wider turns and be sure to check your mirrors often for blind spots. Plan your routes early to avoid getting into heavy traffic, and practice driving at less congested periods during the day until you're comfortable behind the wheel of a van.

What is parking a van like in Los Angeles?

Parking in LA isn't hard, but it does require some additional thought if you're only used to driving a smaller vehicle. Los Angeles streets are dense and often packed, so garages are often easier and more readily available than street parking. But there are strict height limits to abide by; most garages cap van heights at 6.6 to 7 feet tall, so you may need to look for surface lots instead.

Always check height bars, and call ahead to make sure your van rental in Los Angeles is going to fit at a garage you're considering.

How to choose the right type of van for your Los Angeles trip

The first thing to consider is the purpose of your van. Are you looking for a cargo van rental for moving, or do you want a family-friendly van with comfortable seating for your next trip? If you're hauling gear or lots of equipment, go for a cargo van like the GMC Savana or Chevy Express.

For families or large groups, passenger vans that seat seven to 15 people can help you travel comfortably without splitting up into multiple cars. Passenger vans are also built with comfort as a top priority, versus cargo vans that emphasize utility. Meanwhile, a minivan rental gives you easier navigation, sliding doors and better fuel mileage for a road trip.

Loading a cargo van

If you're hauling with a cargo van rental in Los Angeles, be sure to consider the model's maximum load amount, and secure your cargo safely with straps, tie-downs or bungee cords that keep items and boxes secure during transit.

Pack heavier items toward the front of the van, but avoid loading cargo all on one side of the vehicle. This ensures proper balance and stability, which makes driving safer and easier.

Keep anything you'll need close to the doors, like tools, cleaning supplies or important documents. If you'll need something as soon as you arrive at your destination, load it last so it's easy to access.

Gas stations and EV chargers in Los Angeles

In Los Angeles, where driving is a way of life, quality gas stations are never hard to find. They're the easiest way to fuel non-electric vehicles, but many have begun adding chargers.

Top locations include the Chevron ExtraMile Los Angeles near downtown, Costco Gasoline and ARCO. They're all well-dispersed throughout the city so you can keep your van fueled for adventure.

The easiest way to find EV van chargers nearby is to download an app like PlugShare, ChargePoint or EVGo. There's an EVPassport charging station downtown, and two ChargePoints in Central LA, with other charging stations scattered throughout the metro area.

When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
