BMW M4 2015

My experience with East Bay Rental Cars could not have been better. A friend and I decided to make a last-minute reservation for their M4 convertible for our trip to San Francisco. I noted that East Bay typically does not do delivery other than to local airports, but I reached out to ask if they would be able to deliver to our hotel in the city and they managed to make it work. Andrew brought us the car and was prompt, courteous and friendly. The car was in excellent condition and had desirable options such as a manual transmission, M Performance exhaust and carbon ceramic brakes. It sounded amazing! We had a blast driving up and down the coast and it was the highlight of our trip. Andrew and his team are incredible and I couldn't be more satisfied with the experience. I highly recommend renting from them.

The host and his Tesla model 3 are great. Pick up and return location is at a gas station, very convenient. The FSD is a great feature. All you need to do is typing in the address where you want to go. The car drives itself to the location. I would rent the model 3 again from this host when I visit SF in the future.

So thankful we found this car rental! Nore was extremely responsive and pick up was so easy. We actually needed a place to park it for a bit between things, and the garage was a lifesaver. We are actually going to book it again in a few days!

Very satisfied with this Turo rental. Even though the car is from an older model year, the vehicle is still in great condition, well-maintained, and feels very solid to drive. The owner was also very friendly and fast to respond, making the whole rental process smooth and easy. The rental price was very affordable for the quality of the car. I also got a bonus Tesla media play feature, which I really appreciated. Thank you so much!

Benjamin is an amazing host with top-tier customer service! I realized last minute that the smaller car I originally booked wouldn't work for my family, but Benjamin was so kind and patient while answering all my questions to help fix the situation. We had an early morning reservation at Muir Woods where timing was critical, and he showed up early with a sparkling clean, fully gassed car. Do yourself a favor and book with him as he truly goes above and beyond!

I recently rented a car for a trip, and everything went smoothly from start to finish. The booking process was quick and easy, the vehicle was delivered in excellent condition—clean, full tank, and running perfectly. It performed great throughout the entire trip with no issues at all. The drop-off was just as hassle-free. Gary was friendly and professional, making the whole experience stress-free. I really appreciated how straightforward and reliable the service was. I would definitely rent from him again and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a dependable car rental. Great value and excellent service! Thank you! 🚗

Tesla Model 3 2019

First time taking Turo, was a little sketched but it’s new technology. Better than standard car rental service. I’ve never driven a Tesla and it was fun and weird at the same time. Other than that, easy to use but electric cars aren’t for me as in owning. Since my Jaguar was in the shop, I wanted to see how Teslas are. Derek was communicative and great experience. Though I feel it was all an automotive system but I can’t prove that so other than that. Great experience! Would definitely do again

Five stars all the way!! The BMW was an absolute sexy beast, spotless, beautifully maintained, and an absolute blast to drive. It turned an already great trip into an unforgettable experience. What really made this rental exceptional, though, was Rolando and Alberto. They were incredibly gracious, professional, and genuinely fun to work with. Their positive energy, outstanding attitude, and attention to detail made the entire experience effortless from pickup to drop off. It’s rare to come across hosts who care this much about making sure you have an amazing experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from Rolando and Alberto again, and I honestly look forward to doing so. If you’re considering booking with them, don’t think twice. Highly recommended.

Top tips for renting a car in San Francisco

Feeling uneasy about driving in an unfamiliar city? Read these quick tips before you hit the streets of San Francisco.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in San Francisco?

Australians will need to remember that in San Francisco, driving is on the right-hand side of the road. Distances and speed limits are measured in miles and miles per hour (mph), not kilometres. The general speed limit in built-up areas is around 25 mph (40 km/h) unless otherwise posted, and on highways it can range from 55 to 65 mph (90–105 km/h). You can also turn right at a red light, unless a sign specifically says not to, which can take some getting used to. San Francisco’s steep hills and narrow, historic streets can make driving tricky, especially in large SUVs or van rentals. Take extra care when parking or navigating through residential neighbourhoods.

What is parking like in San Francisco?

Parking in San Francisco can be costly, especially near the city centre. The good news for Aussie visitors is that many areas offer free parking on Sundays, so weekends are your best time to go downtown. Popular tourist spots such as Fisherman’s Wharf charge every day of the week. Remember that parking time limits are strict. Most on-street parking is capped at two or four hours, so booking a dedicated car park in advance can save time and stress.

Are there toll roads in San Francisco?

Yes. There are eight toll bridges across the San Francisco Bay Area, including the famous Golden Gate Bridge. Tolls are collected electronically via the FasTrak payment system, and there are no cash booths. If your rental vehicle doesn’t already include a toll-payment arrangement, speak with your host about how tolls will be charged. Note that the Golden Gate Bridge only charges a toll when driving southbound into the city, so heading north is free.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in San Francisco?

Yes. As one of the largest cities in California, San Francisco has plenty of fuel stations and electric vehicle chargers. You’ll find 24-hour stations offering petrol (gas) and diesel along major routes and near the city centre. Thanks to its strong tech presence, San Francisco also ranks among the top U.S. cities for EV charging availability. Fast-charging points can be found at hotels, shopping centres and public car parks.

Do I need to rent a car in San Francisco?

Yes. While the city centre is compact and walkable, public transport in San Francisco is limited compared to most major Australian cities. A car hire gives you more freedom to explore the wider Bay Area, from Silicon Valley to wine country. Relying on fixed schedules when visiting on holiday isn't recommended. For longer stays or day trips beyond the city limits, having your own car in SF is far more convenient.

Frequently asked questions about San Francisco car rentals

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

No, you don’t need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

On the vehicle pages, you’ll see the total miles or kilometres you’re allowed to drive under the heading “Distance included.” You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the “Unlimited distance” filter.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
