Nicknamed the "Factory Tour Capital of the World," York, Pennsylvania is a charming blend of industrial heritage, small-town character, and scenic countryside. Stroll down Market Street for local bites and boutiques, take in street art installations, or hit the road for quaint small towns and rural drives around York County.

York, Pennsylvania

York County History Center

If you like your museums with a side of storytelling, the York County History Center is a must. This downtown staple offers a fascinating dive into everything from colonial politics and Pennsylvania-German culture to York's industrial heyday. Expect everything from Revolutionary War artifacts and antique furniture to exhibits on how York helped power the American economy. It's the perfect place to get your historical bearings — especially if you're the type who likes to know what (and who) came before.

Central Market House

Craving a taste of local flavor? Head to the Central Market House, York’s vibrant downtown marketplace that’s been feeding the city since 1888. This indoor market is packed with fresh produce, handmade goods, international cuisine, and local favorites like pretzels, whoopie pies, and Pennsylvania Dutch treats. It's a great spot to meet locals, stock up for a picnic, or just wander the aisles and see what catches your eye. Whether you're grabbing lunch or just soaking up the atmosphere, it's an essential York experience.

York State Fair

Looking for classic summer fun with a local twist? The York State Fair is one of the oldest fairs in the U.S., dating back to 1765, but it still delivers entertainment, food, and small-town energy. Held each year at the York Fairgrounds, the event draws crowds for concerts from national headliners, deep-fried everything, demolition derbies, and barnyard showdowns — from prize-winning pumpkins to championship goats. Whether you're here for the nostalgia, the neon-lit midway, or just chasing the scent of funnel cake, the fair is a can't-miss experience that mixes tradition with just the right amount of chaos.

Top tips for renting a car in York

From the buzz of downtown York to the quiet charm of nearby orchards and back roads, having your own car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Whether you're navigating city streets or cruising through farmland, these tips will help you make the most of your car rental experience in York.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in York?

Driving in York is simple, but a few local tips can help make your trip even smoother. Speed limits range from 30–55 miles per hour (mph) on city streets, while highways like I-83 and the US-30 let you cruise at speeds of up to 70 mph — perfect for day trips to Harrisburg, Lancaster, or Gettysburg.

If you're visiting from December to March, be ready for classic Pennsylvania winter weather: snow flurries, sleet, and black ice can sneak up quickly, especially on rural back roads and shaded areas. Early mornings and late nights tend to be the slickest so take it slow and keep your headlights on in poor visibility. Before you hit the road, don't forget to pack an ice scraper — just in case.

York County's scenic two-lane roads — the PA 921, PA 425, PA 616, PA 216, and sections of PA 181, PA 124, and US 30 — are great for a peaceful drive, but they often come with tight turns, limited shoulders, and the occasional tractor. Be patient, and plan for a little extra drive time if you're heading deep into farm country. Pennsylvania also has strict hands-free laws, so make sure your phone is mounted securely if you're using GPS.

What is parking like in York?

Parking in York is refreshingly low-stress — no circling the block for 20 minutes like in Philly or Baltimore. Downtown garages like the West Philadelphia Street Garage and York City Parking Garage offer affordable rates and place you steps from hotspots like Market St, the Appell Center, and Central Market House.

Street meters are common around the city center, but usually only operate during weekday business hours (8 am–5 pm), with free parking on evenings, weekends, and city holidays — just be sure to double-check posted signs. Planning to visit during a local event like Yorkfest, First Fridays, or the Ice Art Fest? Parking may be more limited, so it's worth arriving early or using a garage for peace of mind.

Are there toll roads in York?

York itself is toll-free, so you can explore the city and surrounding countryside without paying extra. But if your road trip takes you east toward Philly, west through Pittsburgh, or you hop on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76), you'll encounter toll roads.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in York?

You'll have no trouble finding gas in York, with plenty of stations along US-30, West Market Street, Carlisle Road, and George Street. If you're heading out toward countryside areas like Dover, Delta, or the winery trails, it's smart to top up your tank before you go, as rural stations can be few and far in between.

For EV drivers, you'll find charging stations all along the US-30, near shopping centers like York Galleria Mall, York College, and Penn State York, plus a few other downtown spots like Market Street Garage and York City Parking Garage. Just plug in while you're grabbing a bite and you'll be ready to get on the road in no time.

Do I need to rent a car in York?

Booking a car rental in York is the best option that gives you ultimate freedom so you can explore beyond the city. With your own wheels, you can chase scenic byways, hop between local breweries, pick apples in the countryside, or make spontaneous detours to places like Samuel S. Lewis State Park or Wyndridge Farm.

Public transport won’t get you to most of York County’s hidden gems, and rideshares can be hit or miss outside of the city center. If you’re here for day trips, weekend exploring, or just want to move at your own pace, renting a car is absolutely worth it.
