Hit the road

While it’s hard to beat the wealth of sights and sounds in the City of Fountains, a quick day trip reveals even more unforgettable experiences. From landmark historic sites like the Topeka State Capital, where racial segregation in schools ended, to quirky museums and beautiful small towns, the area around Kansas City is a treasure trove for dedicated road trippers.

Way better than a rental car

Weston, MO

Just a 40-minute trip away, Weston is home to the nation’s oldest continually operated whiskey distillery. It’s also a charming small town and one of the most beautiful in Missouri. Hike along the Missouri River in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark, then taste fresh goat cheese at Green Dirt Farm.

Lawrence, KS

Another charming town is Lawrence, where you can explore the Spencer Museum of Art, the KU Natural History Museum, and the Baker Wetlands. But for many, the real attraction is the Museum of Odd, which houses quirky treasures like Bob Barker’s toothbrush and Elvis’ underwear.

Topeka, KS

In Topeka, you can learn about the Supreme Court case that ended school segregation. History buffs will also enjoy the Kansas Museum of History and Old Prairie Town, while daredevils will love the Evel Knievel Museum: where you can learn about the legend and do a virtual reality jump.

Best Kansas City driving roads

Purple squiggle

Blue River Road

For a leisurely, forested drive, head south from downtown to catch this road that hugs the river and winds through a park. Keep an eye out for birds, as many different species make their homes in the trees that shadow this road.

Flint Hills National Scenic Byway

This winding drive is like a trip to the past, revealing a landscape that’s changed very little from century to century. A great place to stop is the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, which boasts a ranch, bison, and beautiful views of the tallgrass prairie.

Glacial Hills Scenic Byway

Follow the official route of Lewis and Clark on this historic drive from Leavenworth to northeast Kansas. Winding through valleys and rolling hills left behind by ancient glaciers, you’ll pass some of the first towns settled by pioneers along the Missouri River.

Turo hosts have access to training materials on enhanced cleaning practices, using the latest recommendations compiled from the CDC, EPA, WHO, and vehicle detailing experts, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Is Turo a rental car company?

No. Unlike rental car companies, Turo is a peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace where you can book directly from trusted local car owners in the US, Canada, and the UK. Are there cars available near the Kansas City airport?

Yes, there are hundreds of cars available on Turo at locations near the Kansas City airport. After arriving at the Kansas City International Airport or Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport, skip the rental counter and have your car rental alternative delivered for pick-up and dropoff at your Kansas City hotel or the address of your vacation rental to save time and hassle. When traveling to or from your flights, you can also use a hotel shuttle service if you’re early for your pick up time.

We encourage you to request to add authorized drivers before your trip starts, though guests in the US and Canada can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress with no extra charges.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
