If you’re planning on seeing Indy in style (or just with a bit more legroom), renting a car is a no-brainer. Whether you’re jetting in for the Indy 500, or heading out to get lost in the countryside, a rental gives you the freedom to explore like a local. Here’s the rundown to make your Indianapolis car rental experience a breeze.
In Indianapolis, they keep it classic with driving on the right (as with the rest of the US). Don’t be that guy distracted by your phone — hands-free is the law here, so keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Speed limits change depending on where you are: expect 20-35 miles per hour (mph) downtown, with highways hitting 55-70 mph.
Winter drivers, beware of snow and ice! Indy’s winters can bring surprises, so pack an ice scraper if you’re visiting between December and February. Also, Indiana has strict rules around drinking and driving, with a strict 0.08% BAC limit, and a zero-tolerance policy for drivers under 21 with any detectable alcohol.
Parking in Indianapolis is shockingly easy — none of that New York-style hunting here. Downtown has plenty of metered spaces that play nice with credit cards, and if you’re visiting on a Sunday or holiday, you might just score free street parking.
For longer adventures, you’ll find parking garages galore, especially around big landmarks like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Lucas Oil Stadium. Just brace yourself for event pricing if it’s race day!
Indianapolis likes to keep things easy, so you won’t hit tolls right in the city. However, if you’re heading out to places like Fort Wayne, you might meet the Indiana Toll Road. But aside from this toll road, you’re mostly in the clear here, in central Indiana.
For gas guzzlers and EV lovers alike, Indianapolis has you covered. Gas stations are sprinkled all around town, especially along major interstate roads like I-70 and I-65. If you're renting an EV, don’t sweat it: charging stations are plentiful around the city, especially in downtown spots and near the Indianapolis International Airport. You’ll be juiced up and back on the road in no time.
Sure, public transport is a thing here, but with so much to see beyond the city core, a rental car is a serious upgrade. Think about all the detours you can take: the countryside, Indiana Dunes, Lake Michigan, and all those roadside diners calling your name. With your own wheels, you’re free to roam, detour, and get off the beaten path whenever you please.
