Halifax offers a mix of coastal charm, maritime history, and easy access to some of Nova Scotia’s most scenic drives. From the harbourfront to historic sites and ocean views, there’s plenty to explore within a short distance of the airport. A car rental makes it easy to move between locations at your own pace.
Rent the perfect car
The Halifax Waterfront is one of the city’s most popular areas, lined with boardwalks, shops, and places to stop for a meal overlooking the harbour. It’s ideal for a relaxed walk after arriving or before heading out on a longer trip. You’ll find local markets, galleries, and plenty of spots to sit and take it all in. Easy to reach from the airport and well worth the visit.
A short drive from Halifax, Peggy’s Cove is known for its lighthouse and rugged coastal scenery. The route there is part of the experience, with ocean views and small communities along the way. It’s a great example of why having your own rental vehicle makes a difference. You can take your time, stop where you like, and enjoy the drive as much as the destination.
Located at the southern tip of the Halifax peninsula, Point Pleasant Park offers forested walking trails and coastal views in a peaceful setting. It’s a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, especially if you’re looking to stretch your legs after a flight. With easy parking nearby, it’s a simple addition to your itinerary.
A little preparation can make your Halifax airport car rental experience even smoother. Keep your documents ready, plan your routes in advance, and allow yourself time to get familiar with your vehicle before heading out. Small steps, but they make a noticeable difference.
You’ll need a valid driver’s license for the entire rental period, and your driver’s license information must match your booking details. Visitors from outside Canada may also require an international driver’s permit alongside their home country's driver’s license. Make sure all documentation is current and accessible before arrival.
Pickup at Halifax Stanfield International Airport is designed to be simple. Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive detailed instructions in the Turo app, including where to find your rental vehicle within approved airport areas. Instead of heading to a rental counter, you can go straight from the terminal building to your car and get on the road without unnecessary delays.
Dropping off your rental car at Halifax airport follows a similar process. You’ll return the vehicle to an approved parking location and complete the final steps through the app. There’s no need to visit a rental office which makes the end of your trip feel far more efficient.
Halifax International Airport (YHZ) is located about 35 kilometres from downtown Halifax, typically taking 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.
Driving in Halifax is generally straightforward, though roads can be busier during peak hours. Speed limits are clearly marked and should be followed closely. The weather can change quickly in Nova Scotia, particularly outside the city, so it’s worth checking conditions before longer drives. Allow a bit of extra time if you’re adjusting to a new vehicle or unfamiliar roads.
Parking in Halifax is generally manageable, though it can be more limited in busy areas such as the downtown core and along the Halifax Waterfront, especially during peak travel times and summer months. Street parking is available in many parts of the city, but it is often metered and time-restricted, so it’s important to check signage carefully. For longer stays, public parking garages and lots are widely available in and around downtown, offering a more convenient option for visitors.
There are no major toll roads immediately around Halifax. If you travel further across Nova Scotia, some routes may include tolls, which can typically be paid electronically.
Fuel stations are available close to the airport and along main routes into Halifax. If you’re driving an electric vehicle, you’ll find EV chargers throughout the city and surrounding areas. Checking locations ahead of time is always a good idea, particularly for longer trips.
You can explore parts of Halifax without a car, particularly around the waterfront and city centre. That said, having a rental car makes it much easier to see more of Nova Scotia, especially if you’re planning coastal drives or day trips beyond the city. If your itinerary includes more than a few stops or you prefer not to plan around rigid timetables, renting a car gives you far more flexibility.
Rental cars available at Halifax airport include a wide range of options, from compact vehicles for city driving to larger SUVs for longer journeys. Whether you’re looking for something practical or a premium luxury SUV, there’s a vehicle suited to your plans. It’s simply a matter of choosing what fits your trip best.
The cost of car rental in Halifax can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Halifax, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.

We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.
To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

If you book a trip with less than 24 hours’ notice, you have one hour after booking to cancel free of charge. If you cancel after the free cancellation period ends, you will be charged a cancellation fee.
In the rare event a host cancels, you’ll be notified immediately so you can book another car, or we’ll help you find one. Your refund can be temporarily held to expedite rebooking, or the funds can be returned to your bank account — your choice.
