Toyota COROLLA 2025

It was our first time renting and Roger's first time hosting and I was running about two hours behind for returning the vehicle as I have young children and was having a rough day today but he was understanding enough as he could be. He was a very nice reasonable guy and recommend anyone to rent from him.

Top tips for renting a car in Toowoomba

Toowoomba is easy to navigate, but a little local knowledge goes a long way. From driving the steep range roads into the Lockyer Valley to finding parking in the city centre and planning day trips across the Darling Downs, here are a few things to know before you hit the road.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Toowoomba?

Before you start driving your hire car in Toowoomba, get a lay of the land by understanding the local road rules and driving conditions. As is the case in all Aussie cities, always drive on the left-hand side of the road, observe street signs, adhere to marked speed limits, and do not touch your phone while driving. Queensland enforces strict penalties for both hand-held mobile phone use and speeding via fixed and mobile cameras. Notably, you cannot make a U-turn at a light or crossing unless there is a sign explicitly permitting it, and when navigating roundabouts, you must give way both to your right and to vehicles already on the roundabout.

Speed limits in Toowoomba follow Australian standards, with city streets starting at 50 kilometres per hour (km/h), followed by 60 to 80 km/h on multi-lane roads, and up to 110 km/h on major motorways like the Warrego Highway.

Though Toowoomba is small, it's a car-driven city, which means that major roads like Ruthven, West, and Russell Streets can get extremely congested during peak travel times. If you plan on heading out of town and driving on more rural roads, travel carefully — many sections require drivers to navigate hilly sections or use their high beams for safety at night. Always keep an eye out for wildlife crossing, too, though hotspots are generally signed to give drivers ample warning.

What is parking like in Toowoomba?

Parking in Toowoomba's charming city centre is usually an easy feat, especially if you're used to the hustle and bustle of bigger cities like Brisbane and Melbourne. There's ample street parking available, with meters on major roads like Margaret Street and Ruthven Street, amongst all the action. Parking in back streets and suburban areas tends to be unlimited and free, though you should always check signage before leaving your hire car. You'll also find a number of paid car parks dotted throughout Toowoomba, such as the Julia Street Car Park, the Chalk Lane Car Park, and the Joseph Street Car Park.

Are there toll roads in Toowoomba?

Most drivers won't encounter toll roads when travelling around Toowoomba or the wider Darling Downs region. The Toowoomba Bypass (Toowoomba Second Range Crossing) only applies tolls to certain heavy vehicles, so standard passenger vehicles can generally use local roads without paying tolls. If you're planning to drive to Brisbane, however, you may encounter toll roads such as Clem7, Legacy Way, and AirportlinkM7.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Toowoomba?

Yes. Petrol stations are widely available across Toowoomba, making it easy to refuel before exploring the city or heading out across the Darling Downs. EV drivers will also find a growing number of charging options throughout Toowoomba, including chargers operated by major networks such as Tesla, Chargefox, and Exploren. For longer regional journeys, planning your charging stops in advance is recommended.

Do I need to rent a car in Toowoomba?

Not necessarily, but having a car makes it much easier to explore Toowoomba and the wider Darling Downs region. Public transport options are limited, and many of the area's most popular destinations sit well beyond the city centre, including the Granite Belt, the Scenic Rim, and Bunya Mountains National Park. Having a car gives you the flexibility to travel between these destinations on your own schedule and experience more of regional Queensland.
