Top tips for renting a car in Port Augusta

Before you begin your Port Augusta adventure, take note of these helpful tips for the easiest rental experience. Firstly, ensure the availability of your ideal vehicle by booking early, especially during the holidays. Familiarise yourself with local road rules, and don’t forget to enjoy the ride.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Port Augusta?

In South Australia, phone use is restricted when driving, cars must stick to the left, passengers always wear seatbelts, and default speed limits apply unless signs say otherwise: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h outside town, and up to 110 km/h on some rural roads. Slow to 25 km/h in school zones or when passing a stopped school bus, and look out for reduced limits in residential or roadwork areas.

Port Augusta sits at the junction of major highways like the Eyre Highway and Stuart Highway, making it an important link for long-distance travellers. However, Port Augusta's driving conditions can shift quickly between regions and seasons, so it’s crucial to stay alert, check the forecast, and adjust your driving as needed.

Summer brings extreme heat, glare, and the chance of dust storms, while winter rain can create slippery roads or cause temporary closures on rural or unsealed routes. Spring and autumn often mean strong winds and increased wildlife activity, especially at dawn and dusk. Finally, long, open stretches of road can quickly lead to driver fatigue, so make regular stops and avoid driving for long periods without a break.

What is parking like in Port Augusta?

If you're looking to park your Port Augusta car rental, it's helpful to know parking is pretty stress-free — with plenty of street spots and public car parks situated near shops, parks, and main attractions. In the town centre, places like Gladstone Square make it easy to pull in and park while you explore.

Just be mindful of the local rules — the council asks drivers not to park on footpaths or nature strips, and even having two wheels on a footpath counts as an offence. If you’re in a larger vehicle, you might find caravan or RV-friendly areas more comfortable than squeezing into smaller central spaces.

Are there toll roads in Port Augusta?

No, there are no toll roads in Port Augusta or anywhere in regional South Australia.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Port Augusta?

Port Augusta has several petrol stations throughout the town, including options that operate late or 24/7, making it easy to refuel whether you’re staying locally or passing through on a long drive. You’ll find stations along the main routes and near the town centre.

EV drivers are covered too, with public charging stations spread across town. Locations like Tassie Street offer convenient access, making it simple to recharge before continuing your trip across South Australia’s major highways.

However, be aware that on the highways or longer remote roads between towns, there are often limited petrol and EV charging stations — make sure to fuel up before you leave town.

Do I need to rent a car in Port Augusta?

Yes, renting a car in Port Augusta is highly recommended. The town isn’t fully walkable, and many of its standout experiences sit beyond the centre: peaceful waterways, the Arid Lands Botanic Garden, dramatic outback views, and easy access to the region’s famous trains. Having your own hire car lets you explore widely, discover hidden spots, and experience the natural beauty that defines Port Augusta at your own pace.
