Known for its tropical beaches and rich culture, Sarasota is a great destination for family vacations or roadtrippers on a budget. In this artsy beach town, you can relax on cool white sands, drive by breathtaking mansions, and tour museums and galleries to your heart’s content.
In Sarasota, life can be as fast or slow-paced as you make it. Want to spend a whole day tanning on the white quartz sand? Go for it. Want to travel far and wide in search of the best sunsets in the country? Sounds fantastic.
Fill up the fuel tank, hit up the beaches, and bask in Sarasota sunsets.
The fine white sand on Siesta Key Beach comes from the Appalachian Mountains and is estimated to be millions of years old. But you don’t have to be a geology major to appreciate this beautiful quartz sand that remains cool even on hot days.
Another unmissable beach is Lido Key: your destination for sunset cruises, dolphin watching, and deep sea fishing. Near the beach, you’ll find high-class resorts, chic shops, and fresh-as-it-gets seafood.
Florida’s official state art museum is renowned not only for its wide collection of paintings, sculptures, and antiquities, but for its Italian style architecture and gardens. While you’re there, check out Ca' d'Zan: the impressive mansion home of circus king John Ringling.

Ybor City, about an hour away, is a multicultural hub of art, food, and fun. While you’re in the neighborhood, don’t forget to grab a Cubano sandwich, which made its first appearance in the country right here. From Ybor City, you can also explore the larger Tampa area.

The longest cable-stayed concrete bridge in the world makes for an exhilarating drive. More than 21,000 feet long, the bridge offers breathtaking views of the sea and skyline. For a beach-side view with birdwatching, pull over at the rest stop on the bridge’s north side.
For a charming drive through Sarasota’s past, take Bay Shore Road from the Ringling Art Museum down to Indian College Road. Along the way, you’ll pass Sarasota Jungle Gardens and Ringling College, as well as old buildings and historic mansions.
Just outside of Sarasota, Myakka River State Park offers a windy road through canopied woods along the river. Drive slowly and watch out for gators and wild hogs. If you’re in the mood for a hike or bike ride, there are plenty of opportunities to pull off and follow trails into the woods.

Florida has many highways, bridges, and express lanes that require tolls, such as the I-275 bridge across Tampa Bay. Though you may bring cash for tolls, electronic toll lanes allow for cashless tolls. You can pay e-toll fees with an electronic toll device, so if you’ll be around for a while, it’ll be quicker and more convenient to travel around Florida if you get an e-toll device by signing up for an e-toll service like SunPass.
