Top tips for renting a car in Prince George

Renting a car in Prince George is your ticket to adventure — just don’t forget the essentials like road trip snacks and a healthy appreciation for scenic detours. From navigating icy roads in winter to finding the best spots to refuel, these tips will help you hit the ground driving.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Prince George?

Prince George’s roads are generally well-maintained, but winter driving can get dicey — think snowbanks the size of hockey rinks. Make sure you choose a car rental that has the option of winter tires if you’re visiting during the colder months. Remember, the speed limit in town is usually 50 km/h, but keep an eye out for airport signs and construction zones where it drops. Oh, and don’t forget your driver’s license requirements — no one wants a surprise stop from the Mounties, so keep a valid license with you at all times.

What is parking like in Prince George?

Parking in Prince George is generally a breeze — no parallel parking nightmares here. The town centre has plenty of metered spots and public lots, while attractions like Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park and Exploration Place offer free parking. If you’re heading out to the trails, some parks may require a parking pass — chat with your Turo host about how to organise this if necessary.

Are there toll roads in Prince George?

Prince George is 100% toll road free, so you can roam freely without worrying about surprise charges. Whether you’re exploring backcountry routes or sticking to the city’s grid, you’re in the clear.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Prince George?

Prince George has plenty of gas stations along major roads like Highway 97 and 15th Avenue, including a Petro-Canada at 2150 Queensway and a Shell at 1743 Spruce Street.

If you’re driving an electric vehicle, you’ll find chargers at spots like Pine Centre Mall (on 15th Avenue) and near Prince George City Hall (1100 Patricia Boulevard). Public networks like FLO and ChargePoint also operate various Level 2 and DC fast chargers throughout the city, so you can keep your EV powered up for your BC adventures.

Do I need to rent a car in Prince George?

Unless you plan to spend your entire trip within a five-block radius (and miss out on all the best parts), yes — a rental car in Prince George is essential. Public transit exists, but it’s not the quickest way to explore BC’s rugged beauty. With a rental car, you can head to Cottonwood Island Nature Park, check out the Forests for the World, or even tackle a day trip to nearby lakes and hiking trails — all without waiting for the next bus.

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

If you book a trip with less than 24 hours’ notice, you have one hour after booking to cancel free of charge. If you cancel after the free cancellation period ends, you will be charged a cancellation fee.

In the rare event a host cancels, you’ll be notified immediately so you can book another car, or we’ll help you find one. Your refund can be temporarily held to expedite rebooking, or the funds can be returned to your bank account — your choice.
