Ready to explore London like a local? With these essential car rental tips, you’ll enjoy a smooth and hassle-free driving experience.
When driving in London, Ontario, be sure to follow local traffic laws. Drive on the right-hand side of the road and observe posted speed limits: typically 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads, and up to 100 km/h on highways. Always yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, use your turn signals, and watch out for cyclists, especially in downtown areas. Traffic can be busier during rush hours, particularly along major routes like Wellington Road, Oxford Street, and Highway 401.
If you're renting a car on Turo, remember that only authorised additional drivers listed on your reservation are allowed to operate the vehicle.
London offers a mix of street parking, parking lots, and garages, making it relatively easy to find a spot. For convenience near shopping and dining, the Citi Plaza parking garage is a central option in downtown London. Visiting cultural landmarks? The parking lot at the Museum London offers easy access to the city's art and history exhibits.
If you're parking on the street, check signage to avoid restricted zones or limited-time residential parking areas. Many metered spots downtown also offer mobile payment options for added convenience.
Unlike some other cities, London does not have toll roads. However, if you plan to travel outside the city, keep in mind that Highway 407 ETR, a toll road, is located farther east near the Greater Toronto Area. This highway uses electronic transponders or license plate billing, so plan accordingly if your travels take you in that direction.
Gas stations are widely available across London, with several options along major roads like Wellington Road, Dundas Street, and Fanshawe Park Road.
For electric vehicle drivers, the city features numerous EV chargers, including stations at Masonville Place, downtown parking lots, and the London International Airport. Public charging networks like Flo and ChargePoint are common, making it easy to power up your EV during your stay.
While London has public transit options, including buses operated by the London Transit Commission, renting a car offers much greater flexibility for exploring the city and its surroundings. Many attractions, such as Fanshawe Pioneer Village or the nearby beaches of Port Stanley, are easier to access by car. A rental vehicle also allows you to travel comfortably between neighbourhoods or venture to regional gems like Stratford or the wineries of Lake Erie North Shore.
