Car broke down and had to be towed because the engine had no coolant. The host tried to charge me for the remaining fuel even though it broke down before the end of the trip. I had to wait 4 hours at the side of the road.

False statement. I picked the car up from the front of your house where the car was parked all the afternoon. The car was never towed anywhere. I drove the car back home with no issue. The fuel charge is for the fuel that you did use, which was ½ tank. The whole situation was quite orchestrated to get a free ride. In regard to my attitude, you had my full support all the way. I was polite and courteous the whole time. And it’s your obligation to pay for the fuel period.
