Port Douglas, Cairns, QLD

Daintree Rainforest

The world's oldest tropical rainforest sits about one hour north of Cairns, and the coastal drive up is half the Cairns adventure. Cross the Daintree River by ferry, and the landscape shifts to something ancient — thick canopy, creek crossings, and beaches where rainforest meets reef at Cape Tribulation. Only accessible by car, so pick up something comfortable and give yourself a full day.

Port Douglas

The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas traces the coastline with turquoise water on one side and rainforest on the other, a stretch that earns its reputation as one of Australia's great coastal roads. The town itself delivers Four Mile Beach, Sunday markets, and more space to breathe than the busier stretches south. It's a popular destination for reef trips, and east coast car rentals make the run from Cairns Airport effortless.

Atherton Tablelands

An hour inland, the tropical paradise gives way to something cooler and greener. The Atherton Tablelands rise through volcanic crater lakes, curtain fig trees and a waterfall circuit linking Millaa Millaa, Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls on a single loop. Browse car rental options and give yourself the freedom to chase every swimming hole without watching the clock.

I will break my car rental experience (November, 2025) into 3 parts: Turo, car provider and vehicle. Turo. First time to use this app. Overall, simple and intuitive to use. It is a good option when compared to the traditional car rental companies. It was really nice not having to wait at the service rental counter. Car provider. Once you finish with the Turo process, you finalize all the details with the car owner. Daniel was exceptional to work with. He was timely and thorough with his responses to all my inquiries. Our flight arrived earlier than scheduled. I contacted Daniel and he had the car immediately available for my use. He was honest and trustworthy. At the end of the trip, I identified what I thought was a new chip in the paint. He reported it was present before the rental and not an issue. There is comfort in knowing there was no hidden agenda. Vehicle, Toyota Corolla, 2015. Don't let the age or size of the car deter you. The car was clean, dependable and satisfied all of my needs for 2 people. Hawaii may be dramatic with its natural wonders, but it is stingy with the parking spaces and roads (think road to Hana and Haleakala Volcano). We were happy to be driving this car instead of the SUVs and Jeeps that populated the parking lots and narrow, twisting roads. Overall, I would recommend Turo and HIGHLY recommend Daniel and his Toyota Corolla for your car rental needs in Maui.

David was communicative, pickup and drop off was easy with clear instructions, car drove well, overall very satisfied with our experience. Great cost friendly alternative to bigger car rental companies with a lot more flexibility, but come with the right expectations (i.e. don't expect a squeaky clean car)

Ford Mustang 2024

Wow. Just wow. If you’re planning to rent a car while in Oahu, this Ford Mustang convertible is absolutely the way to do it. There’s nothing like dropping the top and cruising along the island coastlines with the Hawaiian sun and ocean views around you. It honestly became one of the highlights of our trip. The car itself was spotless, fun to drive, and perfect for exploring the island. But what really made the experience exceptional was Gabriel. From start to finish, he was incredibly responsive, professional, and accommodating. Pick-up and drop-off were seamless, and he went out of his way to make everything easy and stress-free for our family. If you’re considering renting a vehicle in Oahu, do yourself a favor and rent from Gabriel. You won’t regret it!

Top tips for renting a car in Cairns

Tropical North Queensland runs on salt air, open roads, and the kind of scenery that makes you pull over every few kilometres. A little local knowledge keeps your Cairns car hire experience effortless, from navigating the coastal highways to fuelling up before the rainforest swallows the road ahead.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Cairns?

The default speed limit across Cairns' residential streets is 50 km/h, rising to 60 km/h along main corridors like Sheridan Street and the Captain Cook Highway through the CBD. Outside the city, highway speeds climb to 100 km/h, with some stretches reaching 110 km/h. School zones drop to 25 km/h when children are present, and speed cameras and mobile phone detection cameras operate around the clock across Queensland.

Peak traffic in Cairns builds along the Captain Cook Highway between 7:30 and 9:00 am heading into the city, then reverses from 4:00 to 6:00 pm as commuters head north toward the beaches. The Mulgrave Road corridor south of the CBD also slows during these windows. Compared to east coast cities like Brisbane and Sydney, congestion is mild, but the single-lane stretches north of Palm Cove can bottleneck on busy weekends and during events.

The wet season between November and April brings heavy tropical downpours, flash flooding and occasional road closures, particularly on the Kuranda Range Road and through the Daintree. Creek crossings can become impassable after sustained rain, and cassowaries, wallabies and other wildlife wander onto roads at any time of day. Drive with headlights on in the rain, keep your speed steady, and always check road conditions through QLDTraffic before heading inland or north.

What is parking like in Cairns?

Council operates several off-street car parks across the CBD, including the Lake Street multi-storey, the Esplanade car park near the lagoon, and the Hartley Street car park near the Sheridan Street intersection. Cairns Central Shopping Centre also offers undercover parking. Centre median parking throughout the CBD is a local favourite and well worth knowing about. Read signage carefully wherever you park, as time limits and fees vary by location and time of day.

Are there toll roads in Cairns?

There are no toll roads in the Cairns region or anywhere in Far North Queensland. All highways and roads are free to drive, with no extra fees to factor in.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Cairns?

Petrol stations are well spread through the city, with BP, Shell and Caltex locations along Sheridan Street, Mulgrave Road, and the Captain Cook Highway. Fill up a full tank before heading to the Daintree or the Atherton Tablelands, as stations thin out quickly once you leave the coast. The average price of fuel in Cairns tends to run slightly higher than the east coast average, so keep an eye on comparison apps.

If you hire an electric car, Cairns has a growing network of chargers. Tesla Destination chargers sit at Cairns Central Shopping Centre, Chargefox stations operate at the Convention Centre and near the Esplanade, and Queensland's Electric Super Highway connects Cairns to regional destinations with fast chargers at regular intervals. The network is still expanding, so plan your route and check availability before heading out.

Do I need to rent a car in Cairns?

Cairns' public transport covers the CBD and a handful of suburban routes, but the real magic of this region begins where the bus lines end. The Great Barrier Reef launches from the marina, but the Daintree Rainforest, Cape Tribulation, the Atherton Tablelands waterfall circuit, and the stunning Captain Cook Highway drive to Port Douglas all require a rental car to reach properly. For a region where the destinations are spread across rainforest, reef, and range, your own wheels turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.

What rental car types are there in Cairns?

Cairns sits between reef and rainforest, and the roads out here range from smooth coastal highway to red-dirt tracks that disappear into the canopy. Hire a car through Turo and find the right fit for your rental experience, with East Coast rentals including, but not limited to:

- SUV rental: A spacious SUV like the Toyota RAV4 or Hyundai Tucson handles the winding climb to the Atherton Tablelands and roads near the Daintree ferry with room for all the snorkel gear and luggage you can pack.

- 4WD rental: Vehicles like a Toyota LandCruiser or Ford Ranger provide extra traction and confidence for exploring the Cairns region, especially when road conditions vary due to weather.

- Compact car rental: Compact cars like a Kia Cerato or Mazda 3 are fuel efficient and easy to park along Cairns' CBD streets. Perfect for reef day trips where most vehicles stay at the marina while you're out on the water.

- Convertible rental: Drop the top and trace the Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas with the coral sea sparkling on one side and the rainforest rising on the other.

- Sedan rental: A Toyota Corolla or Hyundai i30 keeps things comfortable and budget-friendly for daily commutes or a relaxed car rental Cairns experience along the coastal strip.

- Passenger van rental: A passenger van like the Toyota HiAce fits families, dive groups, and anyone travelling with more people than a sedan can handle.
