Top tips for hiring a car in Queensland

Queensland road rules and driving conditions

When driving in Queensland, there are a few key things to remember. Firstly, Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road. Be sure to adhere to speed limits and follow the signs, as these can vary across different areas and road types.

Another thing to be aware of is that Queensland's Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit is under 0.05.

In more rural areas, it's common to encounter animals on the road, so stay vigilant and reduce your speed when needed. The state's climate can vary from tropical in the north to subtropical in the south, so be prepared for sudden weather changes, too.

As for road conditions, most major routes are sealed and well-maintained, but there are unsealed roads in more remote areas where a 4WD vehicle might be necessary.

Rush hour and busiest roads in Queensland's cities

Queensland cities and towns generally provide relatively easy driving conditions. However, some suburbs experience rush hours and road congestion that could delay your travel time.

Brisbane: Traffic congestion is most notable during peak hours from 7am to 9am and 4pm to 7pm. Slow spots include Sandgate Road (Junction Rd to East-West Arterial) and Western Arterial Road (Jubilee Terrace to Simpsons Rd).

Cairns: The Bruce Highway heading to the northern beach suburbs often experiences traffic congestion, with the southern suburbs also seeing busy periods before and after usual business hours.

Gold Coast: While not as congested as larger cities, peak hour traffic occurs between 7am - 9am and 4:30pm - 6pm, especially over long weekends.

Townsville: Driving here is pretty easygoing, and Townsville boasts only 20 minutes of rush hour daily. However, you should be aware of peak seasons and long weekends, as traffic patterns can change.

Toll roads in Queensland

When driving in Queensland, you may encounter toll roads that offer faster travel options (for a toll fee). Some of the key toll roads in the state include:

Gateway Motorway: A major motorway connecting the northern and southern suburbs of Brisbane. It provides a quicker route for getting around the city and is a common choice for travellers heading to the airport.

Logan Motorway: This toll road links the western suburbs of Brisbane with the Gold Coast, providing a convenient way to reach this popular coastal destination.

Airport Link M7: If you're heading to or from Brisbane Airport, the Airport Link M7 offers a direct and efficient route that connects the city centre to the airport.

Clem 7 Tunnel: This tunnel offers a convenient route for travelling between the northern and southern suburbs of Brisbane while bypassing heavy traffic areas.

Go Between Bridge: Connecting the Milton and South Brisbane areas, the Go Between Bridge provides a direct route across the Brisbane River and can help you avoid congested surface streets.

Legacy Way: This tunnel links the Western Freeway with the Inner City Bypass, providing a smoother and quicker route for commuters and travellers.

Remember that most toll roads in Queensland are electronic.
