Rockhampton Museum of Art

Though it mightn't compare to the scale of Melbourne and Sydney-based galleries, the Rockhampton Museum of Art makes up for it in charm, energy, and a commitment to culture. The building itself is located on heritage-listed Quay Street overlooking the Fitzroy River, and inside, it houses thousands of brilliant art pieces, including a top-tier collection of Australian Modernist works. Once you've had your fill of culture, check out the street art murals on East Street as you head back into the heart of the city.

Mount Archer (Nurim)

Top tips for renting a car in Rockhampton

From the Capricorn Coast to the towns and landscapes of Central Queensland, many of the region's highlights are best reached by car. Before you hit the road, here are a few useful things to know about driving and parking around Rockhampton.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Rockhampton?

When driving your rental car around Rockhampton, follow local road rules, including staying on the left-hand side of the road, observing road signage and speed limits, wearing a seatbelt at all times, and avoiding mobile phone use. Across the country, handheld phone use is strictly prohibited with harsh financial and legal penalties.

Speed and driver behaviour cameras are in operation throughout the area. Speed limits in Rockhampton are typical — 40 to 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) on city streets and in residential areas, followed by 60 to 80 km/h on multi-lane roads, and 80 to 110 km/h on freeways.

To make a U-turn at a light or crossing in Australia, there must be a 'U-turn permitted' sign, and when navigating roundabouts, always give way to the right and those already on the roundabout.

In contrast with major hubs like Brisbane, traffic in Rockhampton is relatively relaxed, even in the city centre. During peak times, expect small build-ups, particularly when crossing the river.

What is parking like in Rockhampton?

Thanks to Rockhampton's small population and chilled-out city centre, parking is usually a breeze. In the CBD, you'll find metered street spaces in busier areas such as Quay Street, East Street, and Bolsover Street, as well as unmetered parking on side streets. The city displays digital banners that are regularly updated with the status of various parking areas. For all-day parking while you get your errands done, try the Stockland shopping centre (120-331 Yaamba Road).

Are there toll roads in Rockhampton?

No, there are no toll roads in Rockhampton or the surrounding parts of Central Queensland. The closest tolls are located in Brisbane, roughly 7 hours (~650 kilometres) south of Rockhampton, on major freeways like the Gateway Motorway. So, you can cruise around the glimmering Capricorn Coast and its surroundings in your hire car without stressing about additional fees.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Rockhampton?

Petrol stations are pretty abundant in Rockhampton for a town of its size, with no fewer than ten options within close range of the CBD. If you're driving along the Fitzroy riverfront, the most conveniently located spots to fuel up are the United, Metro, and Mobil outlets along Albert Street headed into the city.

When it comes to electric vehicle (EV) charging, Rockhampton's options are limited but not non-existent. There are a handful of chargers located throughout the area, including at Stockland Shopping Centre, the Rockhampton Regional Council building (232 Bolsover Street), Motel 98 (98 Victoria Parade), and Y Motels (78 Fitzroy Street). If you're planning on hiring an electric vehicle for your visit, consider researching beforehand and booking accommodation with an on-site charger.

Do I need to rent a car in Rockhampton?

Not necessarily, but having a car makes it much easier to explore Rockhampton and the wider Central Queensland region. Many attractions, including the Capricorn Coast, Mount Morgan, and access points to the southern Great Barrier Reef, are spread across the region and are most convenient to reach by road.
