Top tips for renting a car in Santa Ana

Step into Santa Ana like a true insider with our essential tips. From driving conditions to parking insights, read on for pointers to help you navigate the city with confidence and smooth precision.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Santa Ana?

Santa Ana’s roads stay busy year-round, with peak congestion from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on major routes like Interstate 5 (I-5) and State Route 55 (SR-55). If you're driving during rush hour, plan ahead or take local routes like Main St to avoid delays. Should you run into any issues, roadside assistance protection can help cover unexpected breakdowns, from dead batteries to flat tire service.

Driving here is mostly straightforward, but Santa Ana winds can make freeway travel challenging. These powerful gusts, sometimes reaching 60 mph, can create sudden lane shifts, especially on open roads like SR-133 or the 241 Toll Road. Keep a firm grip on the wheel and drive cautiously in high-wind conditions.

Speed limits in Santa Ana can vary –– 25 mph in residential areas, 35 to 45 mph on city streets, and up to 70 mph on highways. Watch for cyclists and pedestrians, especially near parks, schools, and Main St, where foot traffic is high.

What is parking like in Santa Ana?

Parking is plentiful but competitive, especially in downtown Santa Ana. You'll find a mix of street parking, parking structures, and designated lots, but spots fill fast on weekends. Convenient options include the 5th & Spurgeon Parking Garage, close to top dining and nightlife, and MainPlace Mall, which offers free parking for shoppers.

Visiting the Santa Ana Zoo? There's a dedicated parking lot on Chestnut Avenue, or you can find metered street parking for an additional fee nearby. Some locations may require a credit card or major credit card for payment at kiosks, so plan accordingly.

Are there toll roads in Santa Ana?

Santa Ana itself has no toll roads, but if you’re heading south toward Laguna Beach or Dana Point, expect tolls on SR-73, SR-133, SR-241, and SR-261. Be sure to check your rental agreement for any information on extra fuel charges or toll pass options.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Santa Ana?

You’ll find Chevron, Shell, and Arco stations along Harbor Boulevard and Bristol Street, making refueling simple. Checking local fuel prices before you head out can help you pay the best rate.

For EV drivers, Santa Ana has over 200 charging stations, including DC Fast Chargers at South Coast Plaza and MainPlace Mall. The Rove Charging Center offers 40 high-speed EV chargers, plus a lounge and mini-market while you wait. Some providers also offer a fuel delivery service, so you can skip the gas station altogether.

Do I need to rent a car in Santa Ana?

If you want to see more than just downtown, a rental car on Turo is the way to go. With the Santa Ana Zoo, Newport Beach, and Costa Mesa all within a short drive, having your own car is a must. Booking a rental car is the easiest way to explore Orange County. Whether you're traveling solo or with the whole family, book your reservation in advance for the best selection.

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked.
