Things to do and places to see in Quebec City, QC

While Montreal is French Canada's modern metropolis, Quebec City is a smaller, charming city with dozens of historical buildings to transport you back in time. It's definitely not stuck in the past, though. As the provincial capital, Quebec City is full of things to keep any visitor busy.

Niagara Falls

Wander the cobbled streets of Old Quebec

Welcome to the only fortified city north of Mexico. Old Quebec is full of fascinating sights, including the Citadelle, a historic fortress, the legendary Château Frontenac hotel and the Plains of Abraham, where one of the most important battles in Canadian history took place. The narrow, cobbled streets and broad squares have a distinctly European feeling.

Admire the majesty of Quebec's Notre-Dame Cathedral

Quebec City is home to the oldest church in Canada, the spectacular Notre-Dame Cathedral-Basilica. Dating back to 1647, it has been destroyed twice over the centuries, but painstakingly rebuilt in the original neoclassical style. It's a true work of art, and one of the most iconic buildings in the city.

Visit Montmorency Falls, the Quebecois Niagara

Montmorency Falls, on the outskirts of Quebec City, is higher than Niagara and perfect for a day out. Hikers will love the trails, and you may want to tackle the 487 stairs to the top — but there's no shame in taking the cable car to the top of the falls instead. A wild zipline will get your adrenaline pumping in summer, while winter thrill-seekers can attempt a daring ice climb.

Top tips for renting a car in Quebec City

It’s not always easy to get behind the wheel in unfamiliar territory. Before you drive away in your rental car, check out these helpful tips to help you navigate Quebec City’s roads with confidence and enjoy a smoother driving experience.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Quebec City?

The default speed limit in Quebec City is 50 km/h, though it’s lower in some residential areas, particularly near schools. Quebec also has a stricter move-over law than other provinces — drivers must slow down and leave space for stopped service vehicles with flashing emergency lights. Road signs in Quebec City are in French only, so it’s worth brushing up on some basic terms.

What is parking like in Quebec City?

Paid on-street parking spots in Quebec City are marked with “P$” signs. Street parking can be tricky to find around the city centre, but there are large underground garages underneath City Hall and the Place d’Youville. Some attractions also have their own parking lots, which can be more convenient if you’re visiting for a few hours.

Are there toll roads in Quebec City?

No, there are no toll roads in Quebec City. However, if you plan to drive your rental car elsewhere in Quebec, be aware that some toll roads and toll bridges are in place, particularly on routes leading into Montreal. Most use electronic payment systems, so check in advance how tolls are collected.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Quebec City?

Yes. As you’d expect from a provincial capital, Quebec City has lots of gas stations. Quebec’s provincial network of EV chargers is the most extensive in Canada, thanks to the province’s dedication to hydro-electric power. Most public charging stations are operated by Hydro-Quebec, and there are also plenty of Tesla charging points across the city.

Do I need to rent a car in Quebec City?

If you only plan to explore the city centre, public transport could be enough, provided you’re comfortable with French. But if you want to venture beyond the city and enjoy Quebec’s stunning natural scenery, renting a car makes far more sense. Having your own vehicle is the easiest and most convenient way to get around, with no language barrier to worry about.
