What are the road rules and driving conditions in Chattanooga?

Driving in Chattanooga means you'll likely come across a mix of urban and mountainous terrains, though the city streets are well-maintained.

Speed limits in Tennessee typically range from 30 miles per hour (mph) to 70 mph in different zones. Make sure to pay attention to speed limit signs, especially around school zones and popular tourist spots like the Tennessee Aquarium and Rock City.

Some roads near the Appalachian Mountains and Lookout Mountain can be steep and winding, so drive cautiously and be prepared for changes in elevation. If you're exploring further, major highways like Interstate 24 (I-24) and Interstate 75 (I-75) give you access to neighboring cities and attractions.

Where can I park in Chattanooga?

There are plenty of places to park in Chattanooga. Keep an eye out for these parking spots as you explore:

- Downtown Chattanooga offers metered street parking and several public parking garages like the 24-hour County Central Parking Garage on 625 Cherry St or one of the many CARTA parking garages scattered across the area.

- Many attractions like Coolidge Park and Ruby Falls have dedicated parking areas for their visitors.

- Hotels like Aloft or shopping malls like Hamilton Place Mall usually offer free parking for guests and patrons.

Be sure to check parking signs for any restrictions or fees. Using a parking app can help you locate available spots and simplify payment.

Are there toll roads in Chattanooga?

You can rest easy knowing there are no toll roads in Chattanooga, or throughout Tennessee for that matter! Sit back, relax and enjoy your scenic drives along the Tennessee River and throughout the Appalachian Mountains without worrying about additional toll expenses.

Where are there gas stations and EV chargers in Chattanooga?

Worried about keeping your rental car fueled throughout your trip? Don't sweat it — gas stations are readily available near or on main roads like Route 64, Brainerd Road, Hixson Pike, and Amnicola Highway.

If you're renting an electric vehicle, EV charging stations can be found at locations like the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, Whole Foods Market on Manufacturers Road, and various spots downtown.

Do I need to rent a car in Chattanooga?

Renting a car provides the flexibility to explore the city and its surroundings at your own pace. With your own vehicle, you're free to visit natural attractions like Lookout Mountain, Ruby Falls, and the Cherokee National Forest without relying on fixed schedules or waiting for transportation services.

Driving also lets you embark on spontaneous road trips to nearby cities or scenic areas, and enjoy the convenience of traveling on your own schedule, especially if you have a tight itinerary or are staying outside the city center.
