Things to do and places to see in Alice-springs

There's so much to see and do in beautiful Alice Springs. Part wildlife sanctuary, part botanic garden, Alice Springs Desert Park is a family favourite. You can learn about Aboriginal culture and get up close and personal with local wildlife. Wildlife lovers can also get their fix at the Kangaroo Sanctuary run by Chris Barnes (known as "Brolga", star of the hit television series Kangaroo Dundee), or at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre. Here are some other popular attractions to add to your NT itinerary.

Simpsons Gap near Alice Springs in Australia

Larapinta Trail

At 223km, the Larapinta Trail is one of Australia's most spectacular bushwalking and trekking experiences. It's located within the Tjorita / West MacDonnell National Park, which is about a 15-20 minute drive from Alice Springs. While some commit to the full trail or extended multi-day treks, there are many hiking opportunities, from shorter day hikes to easy loop walks.

Simpson Desert

The Simpson Desert is an incredibly remote desert region known for its stark beauty, vast red sand dunes, and unique landscapes. Many attractions located on its fringes can be accessed on a day trip from Alice Springs, but a 4WD is needed to navigate the sandy terrain.

Palm Valley

Known for its ancient, rugged landscape, Palm Valley features red sandstone cliffs, rocky gorges, and a maze of narrow, winding sandstone formations that are millions of years old. The most famous trail, "Mpulungkinya Walk," takes you through the heart of the Valley and takes around two hours to complete. If you prefer a more leisurely exploration, you can take a scenic drive along the Palm Valley Access Road. Again, 4WDs are recommended.

Top tips for hiring a car in Alice Springs

With your Alice Springs car hire sorted, it's time to explore its rugged beauty via the open road. Here are a few expert tips and things to keep in mind when hitting the roads in the NT.

Alice Springs road rules and driving conditions

The Alice Springs speed limit depends on where you are driving. The four main highways in the Northern Territory mostly have a 130km/h speed limit, except for smaller sections with a 110km/h speed limit. In the city centre's built up areas, expect a speed limit of 60km/h or less.

As a remote part of Australia, you'll often encounter oversized vehicles and road trains during your drive. Make sure to exercise caution and safely give way to larger vehicles while during through the NT.

While most roads are well-maintained and sealed near tourist attractions (like Uluru and downtown Alice Springs), 4WDs will be required in more rural parts of the Australian outback.

Steer clear of unnecessary risks by avoiding nighttime driving. Local wildlife might share the road with you and can be a hazard. If you're planning a road trip in Alice Springs, check the road conditions before setting off. Particularly if your travel dates fall within the wet season (November to April) or there have been recent bushfires.

It's also a good idea to ensure your hire car has essentials like a spare tyre, tools and plenty of food and water. Alice Springs is located in the middle of a semi-arid region, so temperatures can fluctuate between the high thirties in the summer, and below freezing in the winter.

Alice Springs's rush hour and busiest roads

Alice Springs doesn't experience the typical rush hour congestion that larger cities do. The busiest time on the road tends to be around 8:00 am, so avoid travelling at this time if possible.

Traffic is generally more relaxed, so you won't find the same bumper-to-bumper traffic jams common in metropolitan areas.

Some of the main roads in and around Alice Springs include:

- Stuart Highway: This is the major highway that runs through Alice Springs. It connects the town to other major cities in Australia, Darwin to the north and Adelaide to the south.

- Larapinta Drive: This road runs west of Alice Springs and is a scenic route that offers access to attractions like the West MacDonnell Ranges. It can get busier during tourist seasons (such as the dry season, running from May to October).

- Gap Road: One of the main streets in Alice Springs, it serves as a primary route through town and connects various residential and commercial areas.

Are there toll roads in Alice Springs?

There are no toll roads in Alice Springs.

Parking in Alice Springs

Finding parking in Alice Springs is generally an easy task, with plenty of free parking spaces available in and around the area.

In the city centre, you'll find parking in most streets, such as Hartley Street.

Petrol stations and EV chargers in Alice Springs

Be prepared for remote areas if you're venturing into the greater Northern Territory. Remember petrol stations can be few and far between, so set off with a full tank to avoid being caught short.

If you're driving an EV, you'll be pleased to know Alice Springs has a few government-run chargers that are free to use. Find them at Alice Springs Town Council, or check if your hotel offers free charging. A few hotels in Alice Springs have EV chargers, including Elkira Court Motel and Mercure Alice Springs Resort. Alternatively, you'll find EV chargers at Alice Springs Caravan Park and YMCA Kilgariff Recreation Centre on the outskirts of town.

Do I need to hire a car in Alice Springs?

A hire car in Alice Springs will help you get the most out of your stay. Good, sealed highways will take you to the major tourist attractions. However, 4WD vehicles are best suited to adventurous trips into the heart of the outback.
