Great car; in great condition and fun to drive; Jordan was great to work with. We nearly got stranded without an Uber at the drop off place and needed a ride to the airport and he volunteered if we couldn’t get an Uber. I will definitely use Jordan’s car again when I’m in Durango.

Picking up at DRO

Purple squiggle

Pickup & return areas at DRO

After you land, check the Turo app to find the location of your car rental. Durango Airport has two designated lots for pick up — the Main Lot or South Lot, both of which are just a short stroll from the airport terminal. Your host will leave a parking ticket inside the car for you to scan at the gate. For an in-person pickup, meet your host at one of the designated 60-minute spots in the Main Lot or by the yellow curb in the front of the terminal and enjoy a smooth, stress-free handoff.

Communicate with your host

The key to a seamless pickup? Clear communication. Use the Turo app to confirm all the details you need to know for your booking, including where to collect and return your rental car. If anything changes or if you're running behind, use Turo's in-app messaging to stay in touch on the go. You can also tap the "Share location" feature closer to the start of your trip to help coordinate the meetup.

Parking & airport fees

DRO requires Turo to collect a delivery fee on all bookings that start or end at the airport. This fee isn't marked up or kept by Turo; it goes directly to the airport. Your host may also require you to pay for any airport parking charges. But not to worry, they'll clearly note this in their vehicle listing before you book, so there are no surprise charges when you arrive.

How does airport pickup work at Durango Airport?

With a DRO car rental on Turo, you'll be able to head straight into the driver's seat and start your journey without any added hassle. Once you touch down, head to either the Main Lot or South Lot, both just outside the airport terminal. Check the Turo app to confirm where the vehicle is parked, and you'll find a parking ticket inside to allow you to exit the lot. If you've arranged an in-person rental car pickup, your host will meet you either in the Main Lot's 60-minute parking spaces or at the yellow curb in front of the terminal.

How does drop-off work at Durango Airport?

Ready to return your rental at Durango-La Plata County Airport? Just head to the Main Lot or South Lot, grab a ticket at the entrance, and leave it in the car for your host. Before you jet, send them a quick message via the Turo app with the stall number or section so they can find it easily.

How far is Durango Airport from Downtown Durango?

Durango-La Plata County Airport is only about 15 miles southeast of downtown Durango, making it an easy 20- to 25-minute drive, depending on traffic conditions. Whether you're headed for Main Avenue, a hot spring soak, or a mountain trailhead, you'll be in the heart of it all in no time.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Durango?

Driving in Durango is easy, but mountain weather and rugged terrain mean it pays to stay alert, especially in the winter.

Speed limits in Colorado vary depending on your location. You can expect 25–30 miles per hour (mph) around town, and up to 65–75 mph on highways and interstates. However, some mountain highways can dip below 40 mph or lower, depending on the conditions, so watch for posted signs and stay alert.

If you're visiting in winter, come prepared. Roads like Molas Pass and Coal Bank Pass can turn icy fast, and snowstorms can roll in without much warning. Make sure your rental car has snow tires and always check the forecast before setting off.

Don't forget that you're in wildlife territory. Deer, elk, and even the occasional black bear have been known to cross the road, especially near dawn or dusk, around the San Juan Forest or on rural routes. Slow down, keep your eyes peeled, and enjoy the drive safely.

What is parking like in Durango?

Finding parking in Durango is usually a walk in the park, especially if you know where to look. There are plenty of spots lining Main Avenue, 2nd Avenue, and Camino del Rio. Many lots are free on the weekends and in the evenings, making it easy to grab dinner downtown or catch a show without having to watch the clock.

Are there toll roads in Durango?

Pack snacks and a playlist, because the only thing you'll be spending on the road is quality time. That's right, you won't find a single toll road while you're exploring the area. That means scenic drives and backroads to the hot springs are all yours to enjoy, no toll transponders required.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Durango?

Need to top up the tank (or the battery)? No problem. For gas, try Main Avenue, Camino del Rio, or Highway 160, where you'll spot plenty of stations along the way. EV drivers are covered too, with EV chargers in convenient spots off Escalante Drive, 8th Street, and around the CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital. Some stations may even offer free charging, which is just another reason to feel good about your journey ahead.

Do I need to rent a car in Durango?

If you want to make the most of what Durango and the San Juan Mountains have to offer, from scenic drives on the Million Dollar Highway (US-550) to day trips to Mesa Verde National Park, this is a region best explored with the flexibility of your own set of wheels. With a rental vehicle, you're free to pull over for photo ops, explore off-the-beaten-path trailheads, or grab lunch at a local diner that's miles from the nearest bus stop, and make the journey as rewarding as the destination.
