Top tips for renting a car in Idaho Falls

Renting a car on Turo in Idaho Falls is the best way to explore the city and the stunning landscapes of eastern Idaho on your own schedule. Whether you're flying into Idaho Falls Regional Airport, planning a hiking trip to Yellowstone, or need a set of wheels while your car is in the shop, having the right rental ensures a smooth trip. Keep these tips in mind to find the perfect car and make the most of your time in Idaho Falls.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Idaho Falls?

Driving in Idaho Falls follows Idaho state traffic laws, with speed limits set at 25–35 mph on city streets, 55 mph on rural roads, and up to 80 mph on I-15. Unlike in some states, right turns on red are allowed unless posted otherwise, and Idaho has a "dead red" law, meaning motorcyclists and cyclists can proceed through a red light if it doesn’t change after a reasonable wait. If you're renting a car on Turo in Idaho Falls, be mindful of the city's many roundabouts, especially near S Boulevard and Memorial Drive, where yielding to circulating traffic is required.

Winter driving in Idaho Falls can be hazardous, with icy roads, blowing snow, and visibility issues common from November through March. Highways like US-20 toward West Yellowstone and ID-33 into the Teton Valley can become slick, and bridges and overpasses freeze first. Idaho allows studded snow tires from October 1 to April 30, and chains may be required in mountain areas.

If you're renting a car on Turo in winter, look for one with AWD or 4WD to ensure a safer drive. Checking Idaho 511 for live road conditions is highly recommended before setting out, especially in winter.

What is parking like in Idaho Falls?

Parking in Idaho Falls is widely available, whether you’re exploring downtown, visiting the River Walk, or heading to a local event. In downtown Idaho Falls, you’ll find plenty of street parking on Broadway St, Shoup Avenue, and Park Avenue, with larger public lots near Memorial Drive and the Idaho Falls Library for longer stays. Many Turo hosts in Idaho Falls offer flexible pickup locations near these convenient parking areas, making it easy to grab your rental and go, too.

If you're parking overnight with your Idaho Falls rental car, residential areas generally have unrestricted street parking, but from November to March, snow removal rules may require cars to be moved during certain hours. Popular destinations like Snake River Landing, the Museum of Idaho, and Melaleuca Field have dedicated parking lots, while major shopping centers like Grand Teton Mall offer all-day parking.

Are there toll roads in Idaho Falls?

No, there are no toll roads in Idaho Falls or anywhere in Idaho. Highways like I-15, US-20, and US-26 are all toll-free, making it easy to explore the city and surrounding areas without worrying about extra fees.

If you're renting a car on Turo in Idaho Falls, you won’t need a toll pass or transponder. However, if you're planning a road trip into neighboring states like Utah or Oregon, check for toll roads along your route.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Idaho Falls?

Idaho Falls has plenty of gas stations and EV charging stations, making it easy to keep your rental car fueled or charged. Major gas stations like Maverik, Shell, and Flying J are conveniently located along Yellowstone Highway, Sunnyside Road, and Broadway Street.

If you’re renting an EV on Turo in Idaho Falls, you’ll find over 60 public charging stations, including DC Fast Chargers at Walmart and free Level 2 chargers at Idaho Falls Power on Capital Avenue. Whether you’re staying in town or heading to Yellowstone or Grand Teton, refueling or recharging your rental car is simple and hassle-free.

Do I need to rent a car in Idaho Falls?

Renting a car on Turo in Idaho Falls is the easiest way to explore the city and beyond on your own schedule. While downtown Idaho Falls is walkable, public transportation is limited, and rideshare availability can be unpredictable, especially for early morning or late-night trips. If you're flying into Idaho Falls Regional Airport or planning to visit Yellowstone, Grand Teton, or Craters of the Moon, having a rental car on Turo ensures you can travel without relying on expensive shuttles or slow bus routes.

Even within the city, a rental vehicle in Idaho Falls gives you the flexibility to visit popular spots like the Idaho Falls River Walk, Snake River Landing, and the Museum of Idaho without waiting on rideshares. If you're heading to Yellowstone Bear World, Heise Hot Springs, or exploring the scenic highways along the Snake River, booking an SUV or truck on Turo is the best way to navigate Idaho’s open roads. Whether you need a fuel-efficient sedan for city driving or an AWD vehicle for winter conditions, Turo's local hosts offer more options than traditional rental companies—all with easy pickup locations near downtown and beyond.
