Renting a car at Salt Lake City Airport (SLC) is a flexible, convenient way to explore the city and surrounding areas. Whether for business or leisure, following these tips for airport pickup, car rental options, and drop-off will ensure a smooth experience when renting a car on Turo.

How does airport pickup work at Salt Lake City International Airport?

When picking up your rental car at SLC International Airport on Turo, you have two options for collecting your vehicle. For an in-person collection, exit the baggage claim area and follow the airport signs to the Off-Airport Shuttle Stop, which is easily accessible via a footbridge from the terminal. Take the elevator to the ground floor and look for the Turo-branded placard in the vehicle, and remember to keep this sign visible until you leave the airport property.

Alternatively, your host can deliver your vehicle to any of the public parking lots or garages throughout the airport for a contactless delivery. Chat with your host via the Turo app to confirm where the vehicle will be delivered to SLC International Airport.

How does drop-off work at Salt Lake City International Airport?

When it comes to SLC Airport car rental return, park in an approved lot no earlier than four hours before the end of your scheduled trip. Be sure to leave the parking ticket inside the vehicle and use Turo messaging to confirm the drop-off location. Your host will let you know if you need to use a drop box located nearby, or if it is available, they'll activate their remote locking technology for a more seamless return experience.

How far is Salt Lake City International Airport from Downtown Salt Lake City?

Salt Lake Airport (SLC) is just 6 miles west of downtown Salt Lake City, making it a quick 10-minute drive under normal traffic conditions. Whether you're heading to Temple Square or exploring the city, your rental car gives you easy access to everything Salt Lake City has to offer.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Salt Lake City?

Salt Lake City has specific road rules to ensure a safe drive. Speed limits typically range between 20 miles per hour (mph) in residential areas all the way up to 70 mph on interstates. Utah has a strict DUI law with a blood alcohol limit of 0.05%.

Rush hour typically occurs between 7–9 am and 4–6 pm, particularly on I-15 and I-80. Always yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, and remember you can make a right turn on red after a complete stop.

However, keep in mind that if you plan to head north towards Ogden, you should be prepared to pay for toll fares.

You’ll also encounter options like the I-15 Express Lanes which are High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes that solo drivers can access for a fee, depending on traffic conditions. Carpoolers, buses, and motorcycles can use these lanes for free. An Express Pass in TOLL mode is required for solo drivers.

In the UK, you must be 21 years old or older and have held a UK or EU license for at least one year, or another driver’s license for at least two years. In France you must be 18 years old or older and have held a driver’s license for at least 2 years, longer for certain makes and models of vehicles.

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. Licenses that Turo doesn’t accept in the US include any that have expired, have been altered, are conditional, probational, provisional, or restricted. Learner’s permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

You don’t need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
