Hilo might move slower than other Hawaiian towns, but picking up your rental car doesn't have to. When you book a car rental at Hilo Airport on Turo, you can choose the exact car you want that suits your trip, whether it's a rugged 4x4 for Mauna Kea side roads, a sleek luxury SUV for quiet rainforest drives, or a sedan for cruising Banyan Drive. No rental counter lines, no guessing games — just land, locate your car, and head out. With Hilo International Airport as your starting point, it's all within reach. Chase waterfalls at Rainbow Falls, feel the heat at Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park, or watch the sun dip behind black-lava beaches in Punaluu. Whether you're in town for exploration, relaxation, or a little bit of both, renting a car on Turo gives you the flexibility to explore the Big Island on your terms.
On Turo, renting a car at ITO is easy. Browse cars online, confirm your pickup location, book your car, and get on the road sooner. With pickup locations at airports across the US, you'll be able to find the perfect car for whatever you have planned.

Enter a date and airport location in Hilo, HI (or beyond), filter to find the best car for you, and read reviews from previous renters.

Rent a car for pickup at the airport, or opt for delivery to various destinations, including airports, train stations, and hotels.

Your host sends you pickup details, and you’re all set to hit the roads of Hilo, HI! If you have questions, you can easily chat with your host or contact support.
The host, the car, and the whole Turo experience was 10/10. The price was fantastic and the whole experience was seamless. We had weird hours we wanted to leave and return the car that would not have worked with a car rental agency, but Angel and Turo made the whole process easy and seamless. I’m a bigger guy so I was worried about how comfortable the car would be and it was perfect. The great ride made our whole vacation possible and comfortable. I really appreciated the vehicles safety features too!

Easy pick up and drop off. Car was very clean inside. A/C blows super cold even when it's 100 degrees out!! The windows are not tinted so I suggest bringing your own sun shades if you are going to be parked anywhere but the shade in the summer. Luckily I had those and that made my trip much better. The flip down visors do have the extenders to help block sun while driving thankfully. Charging prices are comparable to current gas prices - about $45 to get 250 miles of charge over a few sessions which is the same as I get from a full tank in my Toyota Yaris. This car DOES have the CHAdeMO fast charge input so it's 30-50 seconds per mile to charge depending on the fast charger & whether you're running the car (AC/radio) or it's fully off. Radio speakers were a little blown out so I had to adjust some settings to listen to my audiobooks but it was easy to do. I had no problem driving from the pickup spot to Kyle, then to the airport, and back into town without needing a charge which was about 90 miles, mostly highway. Just like any Turo rental make sure to take your own photos at pickup and drop off since scratches and such aren't usually documented after every drive by the car owners which seems standard in my experience. Overall a great deal, best price in town especially for a last minute rental. I requested the rental at 9pm on a Tuesday after my personal car died and was able to get this the next morning with no issue. Will definitely keep them in mind when I need a rental near by. Thanks again!

I love the rental cars from Mohammed. He and his staff is friendly and helpful. The cars are small and good at gas. I would suggest anyone to rent a car with Mohammed.

I had an excellent experience renting from this host and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable and smooth car rental experience. The vehicle was extremely clean, well-maintained, and exactly as described in the listing. Communication was outstanding from start to finish. The host was friendly, professional, responsive, and made both pickup and drop-off incredibly easy and convenient. The car drove perfectly and made my trip stress-free and enjoyable. It’s clear the host takes great care of both their vehicles and their customers. I truly appreciated the attention to detail and overall professionalism throughout the rental process. I would absolutely rent from this host again in the future and highly recommend them to others looking for a top-quality rental experience.
Rented this last minute because my Mom didn't tell me until the day before my trip that she had no car. Was pretty easy for the most part. Finding the shuttle at the airport for the car rental area, was a little difficult for me. But you can always ask someone at the airport. Then I followed Turo given directions to the car. It's outside of the rental area but still easy to find because the lot is literally labeled "Turo." As for the car, I DID NOT MIND these "problems" with the car at all, but you should be informed that the car: Cons - Smelled INTENSELY LIKE WEED. I tried to spray it with multiple Febreze, etc. It helped but it still stinks a bit. - The car door lock was extremely finicky, you must PRESS AND HOLD the button it seems. - Crumbs in the backseat (no big deal) - Not sure but seems like occasional light scraping sound sometimes when driving around on normal road. - Not a problem per se, but just know the car has quite a bit of scratches compared to other Turo rentals. Just be sure to document as much as you can. Pros - Good Value for the price - ICE COLD A/C. (Although I visited in winter, so idk how it holds up to the Vegas heat, but again better than my childhood cars with zero A/C) - Pretty quiet car overall (I mention the scrape for the owner to consider getting it checked out, but nothing to make you feel embarrassed while driving.) Overall, I grew up poor, and this car was much better than most of the ones of my childhood, so I didn't mind at all. Just tried my best to document them that's all. But anyone renting who these things might bother should be aware of it. Anyways, thank you so much Nick!!! I would definitely rent again!

Easy pickup and drop off, saved us when the car rental companies ran out of cars at the airport.

Andre was great, the car was somewhat still dirty, dust, dirt, what appeared to be cigarette ashes, animal hair, sticky spills around the cup holders in the center console and the door panels. Crumbs and dust/dirt left in the door handles and cubby's. In the center console cup holders and cubbys. On the top of the dashboard, around the steering column and gauges. Sticky dusty windows and stereo buttons. Rear view mirror had sticky smudges on it. All the windows inside were dusty and dirty with smudges and idk what really.. the car had a bad smell of animals like dogs, and faint cigarette smell.. however as I got further into my trip I got used to it and wasn't bothered by it anymore. A lot of these issues honestly didn't bother me very much. I was more worried of being blamed for them when I returned the car. Unfortunately I was put behind schedule due to a passenger side headlight and passenger side tail light being burned out. However upon informing andre, he was very quick with a solution to take the car to valvoline where they were able to repair the lights before I left for my trip. If I wasn't already running late It wouldn't of bothered me. Andre was also very quick to reimburse me the whole price of the repairs immediately upon me sending him the receipt of the work.. I very much appreciated that! I also appreciate that instead of canceling my trip Andre worked out a way to have the lights fixed with no trouble of my own. He was always quick to respond to all of my very long messages full of questions. This is my first time using turo and I did not know the ins and outs of the rental process. He was able to guide me threw every step all while being polite and keeping his patience with me! Hah. I ended up running behind schedule on my way back as well and was surprised how simple and easy it was to change the return time from noon to after 9 p.m. all without adding any fees to my bill! That was very helpful of andre to allow me to do. I also ended up being a little passed my return time due to vacuuming the car and dusting everything to my best ability. So that andre wouldn't have to deal with someone else's mess and the next person who rents the vehicle will not have to worry about it either. I had no issues with doing that for him after he was so helpful with me! The vehicle was a little different then what im used to. But in no time I settled in with the car and had a very enjoyable trip! I would forsure rent another vehicle from andre in the future due to how well he accommodated me on this trip. Even tho the car had the mess, that was not andre, But left over from previous renters. He even made sure to have a snow brush and ice scraper in the car for me. But unfortunately the previous renters also took that with them. Im sure there will be a new one for the next person who rents the car because thats how much andre cares about his customers !! 5 stars for andre !!! Whoever returned his vehicle like that should be ashamed and think about how it would feel if someone treated your things the same way! Once again THANK YOU andre! I will reach out to you next time I need to rent a car.. I appreciate all your help thru the process! I appreciate your professionalism and quick responses to all my questions and thank you for making sure the vehicle was 100% good to go for me before I left and wouldn't of been able to fix it. 5 of 5 stars for andre !!

My credit card wasn’t working for some odd reason and rental companies wouldn’t let me rent a car so I booked this Turo last minute and it was a reasonable price for five days. I will do it again when I come back to Vancouver in August.
Excellent 1st experience using Turo. The host was very responsive and timely. The vehicle was in great condition and rode very well. The price was a good deal and would definitely use this again as opposed to a major car rental facility. It was a simple process overall and very straightforward.

The host, Tadeh was exceptional. The very best in customer service. I had the best experience with renting from Tadeh. Everything was so easy; Tadeh was super accommodating, very kind, he went way above and beyond what I reasonably expected. Tadeh is a thousand times better than AVIS, HERTZ, Enterprise, Thrifty, Budget, Dollar, and all the major car rental. Tadeh gave me the best deal; the major car rentals do not come close; I saved a lot of money. The car was great, very good on the gas mileage; and very clean. Tadeh made sure pick-up location was very convenient for me, Tadeh drove the car to where I was; it’s the best. Tadeh also picked up the car when I was done and again made sure it was convenient for me. I am very grateful for this. Once I return from my deployment, absolutely renting from Tadeh again; will be telling all my friends and colleagues. This is just amazing customer service. I am very appreciative for everything. THANK YOU
Kiara had great communication throughout the rental process , the car was amazing , clean and comfortable. Rental was a great price as well. I'll be happy to rent from Kiara again in the future.

Good Morning 🌞 Yall! This Car was Amazing! I was able to go see my older Son's College Graduation during the week. The Car rental process was amazing and an easy process. I would definitely rent this Car again!!
“10/10 experience. I rented the car for a week and the total came out to around $400, which was an amazing price for a brand new 2026 vehicle. The entire process was incredibly easy from start to finish. Pickup and drop-off were smooth and convenient, and I loved that I didn’t have to physically meet or talk to anyone. The key was waiting in a lockbox by the window, which honestly made the experience even better for me. The car itself was spotless, smelled clean, and drove perfectly. It was also amazing on gas — I drove all the way through Saturday and the tank was only halfway. The host responded quickly to messages and was super helpful the entire time. Overall, this was one of the easiest and best rental experiences I’ve had. I would absolutely rent from them again and honestly would choose this over Enterprise or Hertz any day

Carma definitely restored my faith in Tullamarine car rental companies. Hannah was super friendly. Pick and drop off was a breeze. Car got 700kms on one tank. No complaints at all. Thanks team!

Fandi and our cohost provided excellent communication throughout the process. Our car, 2020 Honda Insight was clean and in good working order. Performance was good around the hills and mountains in the greater San Francisco area. The drop off at the San Jose airport was excellent. Why go to the “normal” car rental companies!

Car was a great price, great driving, amazinggg gas mileage. Would book again! The host was very communicative in helping figure out Turo for the first time as well. Also extremely easy pick up and drop off at the airport! Way better than rental cars!
No shuttle rides or car rental company chaos here. Once you land at Hilo Intl Airport, breeze past the baggage claim area and stroll over to Row 11 in the main airport lot — just a few steps from the terminal and home to Turo's 12 reserved parking spots. Your host will let you know exactly where to go to find your rental vehicle, so all that's left to do is hop in, grab the exit ticket from the console, and start your island adventure. It's really that easy.
As soon as your booking's locked in, the Turo app becomes your trip dashboard. You'll get the stall number, lockbox code (if needed), and any other key details straight in your inbox. Real-time location sharing kicks in two hours before your trip starts — perfect if your flight's delayed or you're juggling a lei in one hand and luggage in the other.
Hilo International Airport charges a delivery fee for all rentals exchanged on airport property. Turo handles it automatically, with zero markups or hidden charges. If you need to pay for parking, that exact cost will be noted upfront in your booking details, so there are no surprises when it comes time to hit the road.

Contactless check-in and checkout
Many hosts offer contactless check-in and checkout, if their car has remote access technology, allowing you to find the car, unlock it, and be on your way without meeting them in person. Message your host for specific instructions.

Convenient airport car rental pickup and return
Rather than hustling at the busy terminal curbside, take your time picking up the rental car at approved parking lots or garages. Check in, load up your luggage, and get comfortable with the car without a big rush.

Relax with support & damage protection
24/7 support and roadside assistance mean help is just a call away, plus you can choose from a range of protection plans.

Hilo is Hawaii's rainy-side sweetheart — lush, laid-back, and full of surprises. One minute you're face-to-face with a waterfall, and the next you could be biting into a lilikoi malasada or watching molten lava stream into the sea. Visit downtown's Liliuokalani Gardens, explore lava tubes at Kaumana Caves, or cool off at Richardson Ocean Park. With your own set of wheels, the Big Island's east side is your oyster.
Rent the perfect car
Want to feel small in the best way possible? Just 25 minutes north of Hilo, this jungle-wrapped gem is home to a 442-foot waterfall that thunders through a rainforest so green that it almost glows. A short, paved loop trail winds past groves of bamboo, wild orchids, banyan roots, and other smaller waterfalls that make it feel like you've wandered onto a movie set. You'll feel the mist on your face before you've even seen the falls, and the sight of it is sure to make you forget to grab your phone. After your hike, stop for a warm coconut-peanut butter mochi to end the day on a sweet note.
It's not every day you get to walk on a volcano. About 40 minutes south of Hilo, this otherworldly national park delivers blackened lava flows, steaming craters, and hikes that feel like you're stepping into a sci-fi novel. Trek through the Kilauea Iki Trail, explore ancient lava tubes, or just pull over to gawk at the Martian-like views. Don't skip the drive along Chain of Craters Road — it ends where lava meets the sea, and if you time it right, you'll have golden hour all to yourself. The visitor center also runs ranger talks and eruption updates if you're curious about the island's fiery past (and present).
Colorful, chaotic, and completely charming, this is where Hilo's heart beats loudest. Open daily (and extra busy on "big market" Wednesdays and Saturdays when the most vendors show up), the market spills out onto the sidewalks with fresh produce, sizzling snacks, handmade crafts, and that unmistakable Big Island vibe. Grab a cup of lilikoi lemonade, sample a rich Laulau, and chat with local artists who'll insist you smell their plumeria soap or try a slice of Ulu cake. If you're lucky, you can catch live music or a last-minute hula performance under the tents — just follow the rhythm of the drums.
Hilo might be known for its easygoing pace, but navigating the island takes a little planning. From narrow one-lane bridges to pop-up rainstorms and winding coastlines, having your own car makes it easier to manage. Before you fire up the engine and head for the waterfalls, here are a few things to keep in mind for a smoother drive.
Want to know how to collect your car rental? Hilo Airport has 12 reserved parking spaces in Row 11. So once you land, open the Turo app to find your host's message with the exact stall. From baggage claim, it's just a short walking distance across the access road without any shuttle or long queues. Your host will have left a parking ticket in the car, so you can hop in, drive out, and be cruising down Kuhio Street in minutes.
Ready to drop off your car? Hilo Intl Airport's Row 11 is where you'll have to go at the end of your trip. Just pull a fresh parking ticket, return the vehicle to any of the 12 designated stalls, and park within four hours of your trip ending. Then, follow your host's instructions — either to secure the key in a drop box located nearby, or coordinate a remote lock — and send a quick message via the app with your stall number. That's it! No rental desk, no fuss.
Hilo International Airport is one of those rare airports where the town feels like an extension of the terminal. Just about three miles away via Kekuanaoa Street (about an eight-minute drive). It's a straight shot into the heart of the downtown, where garden paths, breezy cafés, and ocean views are waiting before your playlist can even hit the next song.
Driving around Hilo is laid-back, but there are still a few essentials to know. Speed limits are typically 25–45 miles per hour (mph) in residential and urban zones and go up to about 60 mph on highways. Hawaii is a hands-free state, so phones need to be mounted if you're using GPS. You'll also need to keep your headlights on whenever your wipers are on — it's not just smart, it's the law.
Weather on this side of the island changes fast. Expect sudden downpours, especially in the afternoons, and slick roads in forested or shaded areas. Debris like leaves, branches, or even the occasional lava rock can show up after a storm, especially near Puna or the Olaa Forest. Take it slow around blind corners and use a low gear on steep descents if you're driving Saddle Road or heading into Volcanoes National Park.
As for wildlife, keep an eye out for nene geese near Saddle Road and wild pigs that sometimes roam into rural roadways around dawn or dusk. Chickens, mongoose, and the odd stray dog can also make an appearance near beach parks or residential areas. Always stay alert, especially on less-traveled roads — you’re sharing the road with more than just other drivers.
Downtown Hilo is easy when it comes to parking. You'll find plenty of spots along Kamehameha Avenue and free public lots near the farmers market near Punahoa Street. Beaches like Richardson and Carlsmith have small lots that fill up quickly, especially on weekends (early mornings or late afternoons are your best bet). At Hawaii National Park, there's ample roadside parking and scenic pull-offs, though a day-use fee applies at the entrance.
None at all. Hawaii Island doesn't do tolls — just winding scenic highways, one-lane bridges, and photo-worthy pit stops along the way.
Kanoelehua Avenue is your best bet for fuel, with stations located along the Hawaii Belt Road, Puainako Street, and Kinoole Street — all within easy reach. If you're driving an electric vehicle, you can find charging stations at Target, the Grand Naniloa Hotel, and at ITO Airport. Most are close to restaurants or shops, so you can recharge while you explore the area.
Without a doubt. Hele-On buses are limited, and the sights you came for, like volcanic craters, rainforest trails, and black-sand beaches, are scattered across miles of island terrain. Renting a car on Turo lets you build your own itinerary, whether you're chasing lava glow after dark, sunrise on Mauna Kea, or just the best malasadas in town. No tour bus, no fixed route, just the open road done your way.
With Turo, you can browse and book from a wide range of vehicle classes, all offered by local hosts near Hilo Intl Airport (ITO). Whether you're navigating narrow rainforest roads or hauling boogie boards down the coast, there's something for every kind of trip:
- Economy and compact cars – Budget-friendly and nimble, models like the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Versa, or Nissan Rogue are perfect for quick trips through town or coffee runs before the market opens.
- Luxury sedans – For scenic coast drives with extra comfort, book a Lexus IS or BMW 3 Series. These premium sedans strike the right balance between performance and polish.
- SUVs – From waterfall hikes to family beach days, options like the Cadillac XT6 or Mercedes-Benz GLE give you space and comfort with island-ready flair.
- Electric vehicles – Silent, efficient, and easy to charge at public stations near Hilo and Volcano, EVs like the Tesla Model Y or Kia EV6 are ideal for smooth, low-emission cruising. Try an electric luxury sedan if you're after that extra touch of quiet refinement.
- Pickup trucks – For surf missions, supply runs, or scenic overlooks with rough terrain, pickup trucks like the Ford F-150 are built for flexibility. A great option when you need more than a standard SUV.
- Minivans and passenger vans – Traveling with a big group? Vehicles like the Chrysler Pacifica or Ford Transit offer limo van–level room, perfect for multigenerational trips or group adventures.
- Sports cars and convertibles – Whether it’s a top-down cruise along the coast or just treating yourself to something bold, a Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Camaro SS delivers the best deals on tropical fun — and tradewinds in your hair.
