Let me start by saying we had an excellent time with the car. John was easy to communicate with and it’s a fun drive. You’re sure to get lots of looks and comments in this ride! We had the car for 2 days, driving from John’s house up to Los Olivos and back for my husband’s birthday.
Upon arrival John indicated that he has his mechanic give the car an overlook and the engine had been warmed up before we took the keys. We took off and all was well.
About 2 hours into the drive, after stopping for gas, we could not get the car to start. After about 20 min of trying to give it a rolling start, we called John. John was quick to take action, calling AAA and putting us on contact so we could communicate directly with the AAA person.
We ended up having to wait about an hour for the driver to arrive. He quickly diagnosed that the battery was dead and John approved the replacement. We paid (John reimbursed us with cash when we dropped the car off), and once the new battery was in we were off again.
My critique is twofold and the reason why I cannot give a 5 star review:
First, John had made the comment about the mechanic charging the battery. If the battery needs a charge then that shows it probably is on its last leg and should be replaced. Knowing we paid over $2k for a weekend with this car, and knowing how far we planned to go, this is something I would have expected John to handle proactively. Instead he took the risk and it was a big inconvenience to us. We lost a couple hours of our time in total and missed our first wine tasting appointment for which we were penalized.
Second, although John was apologetic and reimbursed us for the battery, there was no additional financial consideration given for our time lost nor our missed tasting. We own an AirBnB and any time a guest has an issue we offer even a small token for the disturbance. This was a missed opportunity for John to secure a 5 star review and frankly, disappointing.
