Navy Pier

Jutting into Lake Michigan, Navy Pier blends waterfront walks with skyline views and classic attractions. The Centennial Wheel is best near sunset, when the city softens and the lake reflects the lights. Driving gives you the flexibility to linger, then continue along the shoreline.

Lincoln Park Zoo and Lakefront Trail

Just beyond downtown, Lincoln Park pairs leafy paths with open lake views. The zoo sits steps from the Lakefront Trail, making it easy to combine green space with city scenery. With a car, you can move between beaches, cafés, and quieter neighborhoods in one smooth loop.

Chicago Riverwalk

The Riverwalk traces the city’s architectural heart, lined with cafés, public art, and boat traffic. Early mornings are calm and reflective, while afternoons buzz with energy. Having a car nearby makes it easy to head to your next stop once you’re done by the river.

Long-term car rental

Long stays change the way you move through a city. With a longer booking, days settle into a natural flow, from morning coffee runs to late evenings across different neighborhoods. Having a Chicago rental car at your disposal means you can live like a local, take on longer commutes with ease, and adjust plans as work, family, or curiosity shifts over time.

Vacation car rental

Chicago trips rarely stay confined to one postal code. One morning might start by the water’s edge, the next by wandering galleries, neighborhoods, and food spots that you'll want to return to. A vacation booking gives you the freedom to visit landmarks at your own pace, chase good weather, and let the journey stretch well beyond the places most visitors stop.

Luxury car rental

Sliding into a premium vehicle transforms everyday routes into moments worth savoring, from polished arrivals at dinner to quiet nighttime cruises. Choosing a luxury car rental adds confidence and comfort, turning movement itself into part of the experience rather than just the means to get there.

Top tips for renting a car in Chicago

Renting a car in Chicago allows you to see the city on your terms, especially once you move beyond the Loop. From navigating traffic patterns to timing your drives around peak hours, a little local know-how makes all the difference.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Chicago?

Driving through the Windy City means sharing the road with commuters, cyclists, and elevated trains. Major arteries like I-90, I-94, and Lake Shore Drive funnel traffic toward the Loop, with rush hour peaking between 7:00–9:00 AM and 4:00–6:30 PM. Streets near Wabash Ave can feel especially dense during weekday afternoons.

Weather plays a big role, too. Winters off Lake Michigan bring icy winds and lake-effect snow, while summer heat can slow traffic near construction zones. Posted speed limits typically range from 25–30 mph on city streets and 55 mph on expressways, though enforcement tightens near schools and transit corridors.

Around Chicago Airport, roadways like Zemke Blvd and nearby connectors stay busy throughout the day. If you’re weighing driving against the blue line or other public transport, note that a car offers flexibility well beyond the downtown core, especially for late nights or early departures from Union Station.

What is parking like in Chicago?

Parking varies block by block, but it’s manageable. Downtown garages near Millennium Park, Grant Park, and the Loop offer consistent availability, while neighborhoods like River North and West Loop lean heavily on structured parking. Residential streets often require permits, so signage matters.

For longer stays, garages near transit hubs and cultural districts tend to be the most reliable.

Are there toll roads in Chicago?

Yes. Illinois has several toll roads, including I-90, I-294, and I-88, which ring and radiate out from the city. These routes are commonly used for regional travel and airport access.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Chicago?

Fuel stations are easy to find along major corridors like Western Avenue, North Avenue, and Roosevelt Road, with national brands spread across the city. EV drivers will also find charging stations in public garages near the Loop, Lincoln Park, and lakefront attractions.

Chicago continues expanding its charging network, making electric vehicles a practical option for both city driving and suburban trips.

Do I need to rent a car in Chicago?

Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, and many of its best experiences sit well beyond the downtown grid. A car gives you the freedom to move easily between lakeside stretches along Lake Shore Drive, residential pockets like Lincoln Park and Hyde Park, and day trips that aren’t practical by train alone. On Turo, renting a car makes it simple to explore the city on your own schedule, carry luggage or gear comfortably, and reach places public transport doesn’t cover efficiently.

Frequently asked questions about Chicago car rentals

When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

* Any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland, but this protects your own wallet. In the US, liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency.
