Turo makes it easy to choose a car that fits real life here, not just the postcard version.

Austin runs on contrast. Bright sun on limestone roads through the Texas Hill Country, long night drives home after music festivals, and spontaneous detours to nearby locations that don’t show up on schedules. Nissan LEAF 2016

Easy pick up and drop off. Car was very clean inside. A/C blows super cold even when it's 100 degrees out!! The windows are not tinted so I suggest bringing your own sun shades if you are going to be parked anywhere but the shade in the summer. Luckily I had those and that made my trip much better. The flip down visors do have the extenders to help block sun while driving thankfully. Charging prices are comparable to current gas prices - about $45 to get 250 miles of charge over a few sessions which is the same as I get from a full tank in my Toyota Yaris. This car DOES have the CHAdeMO fast charge input so it's 30-50 seconds per mile to charge depending on the fast charger & whether you're running the car (AC/radio) or it's fully off. Radio speakers were a little blown out so I had to adjust some settings to listen to my audiobooks but it was easy to do. I had no problem driving from the pickup spot to Kyle, then to the airport, and back into town without needing a charge which was about 90 miles, mostly highway. Just like any Turo rental make sure to take your own photos at pickup and drop off since scratches and such aren't usually documented after every drive by the car owners which seems standard in my experience. Overall a great deal, best price in town especially for a last minute rental. I requested the rental at 9pm on a Tuesday after my personal car died and was able to get this the next morning with no issue. Will definitely keep them in mind when I need a rental near by. Thanks again!

Gregg was very responsive and very accommodating to my reservation changes. Pickup/Drop-off is insanely easy, no hassle. He makes charging easy by providing a Chargepoint card! The car drove excellently, easy to handle, works with Apple Carplay/Android Auto! Price is virtually unbeatable for the quality. Would definitely recommend and return for future Austin trips.

This car was incredibly comfortable and perfect for our trip. The ride was smooth, the interior was clean, and it had plenty of space for luggage and passengers. My partner loved it so much that she kept joking that I should buy one for us! The host was excellent throughout the entire experience. Communication was fast, clear, and friendly from the moment I booked. Picking up the vehicle was simple and hassle-free, and returning it was just as easy. Overall, everything went perfectly, and I would highly recommend both the vehicle and the host to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable rental. 10/10 experience!

Gregg was very helpful and the car worked well. He provided a lot of great resources for first-time electric car drivers like myself. Using the attached card for free charging at the end was helpful as well. The car could have been a bit cleaner, but it was not a deal killer.

Very nice and responsive. The car itself has a small engine, which initially was a slight learning curve if you're not used to compact vehicles, but it for me from point A to B on a 4 hour road trip.

Mount Bonnell

One of the highest natural points in Austin, Mount Bonnell offers sweeping views over the Colorado River and west Austin’s quiet hills. It’s a quick drive from central neighborhoods, and parking sits close to the steps, making this an easy sunset stop between plans rather than a full hike commitment.

Barton Springs Pool

Fed by underground springs near downtown, Barton Springs Pool stays cold year-round and draws locals looking to reset after long afternoons in the sun. Arriving by car lets you time your visit around crowds, then roll straight toward nearby restaurants or evening shows without backtracking.

McKinney Falls State Park

Just south of the city, McKinney Falls State Park trades traffic noise for water over limestone shelves and shaded creekside trails. The Lower Falls are especially popular after rainfall, when the landscape shifts fast. A car makes this an easy half-day escape that still leaves room for dinner plans back in Austin.

Top tips for renting a car in Austin

Getting around Austin is easy once you know what to expect on the road. These tips are designed to help you move smoothly through a vibrant city shaped by music, water, and wide-open skies, so your time behind the wheel feels intuitive from the first turn to the last mile.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Austin?

Austin’s road network mixes fast-moving highways with dense central streets, so awareness matters early in your journey. Major arteries like I-35, MoPac Expressway, and US-183 see their heaviest congestion during morning and evening rush periods, especially on weekdays. Around the Austin–Bergstrom International Airport, traffic often thickens during the first two hours after peak arrival windows, so plan extra time around the terminal area.

Downtown streets can feel tight, with frequent one way streets and short blocks that demand slower speeds and sharper attention. Posted limits typically range from 25 to 30 mph in central neighborhoods, increasing to 65 or 70 mph on highways heading out of town. The layout reflects a growing town that expanded quickly, so navigation apps are helpful.

Weather also plays a role. Summer heat and sun can be intense, affecting visibility and driver fatigue, while sudden storms may cause brief flooding on low-lying roads near Lady Bird Lake. These conditions tend to peak on weekends tied to festivals, when traffic patterns shift and patience becomes part of the journey.

What is parking like in Austin?

Parking in Austin varies by neighborhood, with downtown offering a mix of garages and surface lots clustered near Congress Avenue, the Warehouse District, and Rainey Street. Facilities like the City Hall Garage and One Texas Center Garage are commonly used starting points for central plans, especially when heading toward restaurants or live venues.

Outside downtown, parking becomes easier and more relaxed. Areas like South Congress and East Austin often have a blend of residential streets and small lots, making it simpler to settle in before exploring nearby cafes or trails. Locals often note that arriving earlier in the evening improves your odds during busy nights.

Are there toll roads in Austin?

Several toll roads operate around Austin, including State Highway 45 and State Highway 130. These routes are mainly used to bypass congestion when traveling between suburbs or heading beyond the city.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Austin?

Gas stations are easy to find along South Lamar Boulevard, Burnet Road, and Riverside Drive, as well as near highway on-ramps leading out of the city. These corridors support steady traffic and make refueling simple during daily drives.

Austin is also well suited for electric vehicles, with EV chargers spread across public garages, shopping centers, and areas near Lady Bird Lake. Charging stations appear frequently in central neighborhoods and around tech hubs, making it convenient to explore without range anxiety.

Do I need to rent a car in Austin?

Austin’s character stretches well beyond the downtown area, and having a car unlocks that full range. From hill country backroads to swimming holes, music venues, and food spots scattered miles apart, flexibility matters. Renting on Turo lets you explore at your own pace, connecting downtown Austin to places like Dripping Springs or Lockhart without relying on fixed routes, and turning the region into a place you can truly explore.

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. Learner’s permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
