Ybor City, about an hour away, is a multicultural hub of art, food, and fun. While you’re in the neighborhood, don’t forget to grab a Cubano sandwich, which made its first appearance in the country right here. From Ybor City, you can also explore the larger Tampa area.
If you haven’t yet had your fill of pristine beaches, head an hour and a half north to Clearwater. Once you’ve finished vegging on the beach and swimming in the incredibly clear water, take a tour of celebrity homes, then return to Pier 60 for one of the country’s most iconic sunsets.

The longest cable-stayed concrete bridge in the world makes for an exhilarating drive. More than 21,000 feet long, the bridge offers breathtaking views of the sea and skyline. For a beach-side view with birdwatching, pull over at the rest stop on the bridge’s north side.
For a charming drive through Sarasota’s past, take Bay Shore Road from the Ringling Art Museum down to Indian College Road. Along the way, you’ll pass Sarasota Jungle Gardens and Ringling College, as well as old buildings and historic mansions.
Just outside of Sarasota, Myakka River State Park offers a windy road through canopied woods along the river. Drive slowly and watch out for gators and wild hogs. If you’re in the mood for a hike or bike ride, there are plenty of opportunities to pull off and follow trails into the woods.
