Top tips for renting a car in New York

A rental car on Turo gives you the freedom to chase bagels in Brooklyn at sunrise and catch sunset over the Hudson without watching the clock. Skip the subway delays and crowded platforms — driving lets you see a different side of the city, from quiet neighborhood streets to scenic weekend escapes. Here’s what to know before you hit the road.

How does airport pickup work near LaGuardia Airport?

Picking up near LaGuardia Airport is straightforward. Hosts typically arrange handoff in East Elmhurst, close to terminals B or C, but outside airport boundaries. You’ll often meet near the common bus area located just outside the ground transportation zones. If you ever need any additional information, simply message your host via the Turo app to clarify any questions.

How does drop-off work near LaGuardia Airport?

Rental car return is just as simple. Use the Turo app to confirm where you'll return your rental car near LaGuardia Airport. Plus, you can easily use the Turo app to share the parking details with your host, too. If you’re flying out after midnight, many hosts accommodate after-hours returns, but always check the listing beforehand.

How far is LaGuardia Airport from Downtown New York?

LaGuardia Airport is conveniently located in East Elmhurst, around eight miles from Midtown Manhattan. With a vehicle ready to go nearby, you can bypass the rental car shuttle bus and slip straight onto Grand Central Parkway. In under 30 minutes, you’ll be in the heart of the city, ready to dive into your NYC adventure.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in New York?

Driving in New York requires sharp attention, especially during rush hour, when major routes like the Cross Bronx Expressway and Brooklyn-Queens Expressway crawl with congestion. If you're heading into Manhattan, expect delays around bridges and tunnels, particularly during weekday peak hours (7:00 to 10:00 AM and 4:00 to 7:00 PM).

Speed limits are typically 25 mph on city streets and up to 65 mph on highways, depending on posted signs. It’s important to note that right turns on red are prohibited in most areas of New York City unless signs state otherwise. One-way streets, restricted bus lanes, and high pedestrian traffic also make city driving unique.

Winters can be icy and unpredictable, especially between December and March. If you're heading north toward the Catskills or Adirondacks, be prepared for snow and slick roads. In summer, thunderstorms and heat can affect visibility and traffic conditions, so planning your route ahead is key.

What is parking like in New York?

Parking is one of the trickier parts of driving in New York, particularly in Manhattan, where street spots are rare and often metered. Alternate side parking rules are strictly enforced and vary by neighborhood.

If you're looking for something more reliable, opt for garages like SP+ on West 44th Street or Icon Parking near the Port Authority area. Further out in neighborhoods like Astoria or East Elmhurst, street parking becomes more manageable — especially during off-peak hours.

Are there toll roads in New York?

Yes, New York has multiple toll roads and crossings, including the New York State Thruway, Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Queens Midtown Tunnel, RFK Bridge, and the Port Authority-operated crossings between Manhattan and New Jersey.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in New York?

Gas stations are easy to spot throughout Queens and Brooklyn, especially along Queens Boulevard and Northern Boulevard. In Manhattan, they’re fewer and farther between, so fill up before heading into the borough.

For electric cars, New York’s EV charging infrastructure is strong. You’ll find EVgo stations in Long Island City, ChargePoint hubs near the Transportation Center, and Tesla Superchargers around Williamsburg. The city’s EV network makes electric rentals a practical choice for urban and regional travel alike.

Do I need to rent a car in New York?

If you want to see more than Manhattan, renting a car is essential. When you book with Turo, you can explore destinations that public transport skips, like the art-filled Dia Beacon, the scenic Storm King Highway, and the quiet trails of Bear Mountain. Planning a weekend in the Catskills, a beach day in Montauk, or a foodie escape to Hudson? A rental gives you the flexibility to go beyond the boroughs and into the real heart of New York State.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in New York?

From downtown drives to weekend escapes, New York offers a mix of city grit and scenic getaways — and Turo helps you book the perfect rental car to match. Choose from a variety of vehicle types, including but not limited to:

- SUV rental: Tackle city traffic or upstate road trips with ease in a Toyota RAV4 or BMW X5. Great for extra passengers, luggage, or unpredictable weather.

- Luxury car rental: Arrive in style with sleek picks like the Audi A6 or Mercedes-Benz E-Class—perfect for events, client meetings, or special nights out.

- Performance sports car rental: Cruise the West Side Highway in a Ford Mustang, Tesla Model 3, or Dodge Challenger.

- Sedan rental: Ideal for everyday use, models like the Honda Accord or Hyundai Elantra make getting around the boroughs efficient and comfortable.

- Van rental: For group travel, minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica offer space, convenience, and a smooth ride from Brooklyn to Beacon.

How much does it cost to rent a car in New York?

The cost of car rental in New York can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in New York, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.

Learner’s permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

On the vehicle pages, you’ll see the total miles or kilometres you’re allowed to drive under the heading “Distance included.” You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the “Unlimited distance” filter.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
