Let Baltimore charm you

Once a working-class port town, Baltimore has more than earned its nickname Charm City. Teeming with quaint streets and picturesque harbors, it also houses countless museums, a plethora of historic buildings, and two famous ballparks.

But while there’s plenty to see, take your time to appreciate Baltimore’s trendy restaurants and windy harbor views. Stroll through expansive Patterson Park, get lost in the National Aquarium’s coral reef, and snag a delicious crab cake at the iconic Inner Harbor.

Baltimore favorites

There’s no shortage of seaside attractions, historic landmarks, and old-world charm in Baltimore.

National Aquarium

Stroll through shark alley, explore a replicated coral reef, and view more than 700 species of water-loving creatures at the National Aquarium — one of Maryland’s largest tourist attractions and a lovely visit any time of the year.

Fort McHenry

During the War of 1812, American soldiers’ valiant fight to defend Baltimore inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Today, you can visit the birthplace of the United States’ National Anthem, now a museum and monument.

Oriole Park or Ravens Stadium

Whether you’re an Orioles or Ravens fan, Baltimore is the perfect place to take in an old-school game of baseball. The Camden Yards Sports Complex houses both the Ravens Stadium and Oriole Park, which is renowned as one of the most beautiful Major League ballparks.

Washington, DC

While you’ll definitely need more than a day to see all of Washington, America’s capital is a convenient hour’s drive away from Baltimore. Stroll along the Capitol Mall, hit up the Smithsonians, and ride to the top of the Washington Monument for a history-making day.

Alexandria, VA

Alexandria is a mecca for lovers of American history. Among the city’s colonial homes and museums are George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the Carlyle Mansion, and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum. Once you’ve had your fill of museums, stroll along the harbor and grab some frozen custard.

Lancaster, PA

Rolling farmlands, white barns, and horse-drawn buggies — the Amish town of Lancaster is a peaceful paradise. Tour a 19th-century farm, complete with a schoolhouse and blacksmith’s shop; then pick up baked goods at the Lancaster Central Market, in business since 1730.

You’ll need to pay for the parking at the garage when you exit, but returning the car to the hourly garage was lovely.

Best Baltimore driving roads

Purple squiggle

Harford Road

Harford Road stretches from Baltimore’s Old Town area up past Gunpowder Falls State Park, which is a nice escape from the city. The part of Harford Road in Old Town is one of Maryland’s oldest streets, but don’t worry: it’s a smooth, easy drive.

Falls Road Scenic Byway

For a beautiful scenic drive, take Falls Road northeast from downtown Baltimore. This 39-mile route alternates between valley landscapes and starry cityscapes. As you leave the city behind, keep an eye out for old grist and cotton mills, many of which are now galleries, shops, and homes.

Star-Spangled Banner Byway

This 100-mile drive tells the story of the War of 1812 through historic sites like Patterson Park, Federal Hill, Fort McHenry, and Fell’s Point. At each stop, you’ll learn about the events of the summer of 1814, when Baltimore’s citizens defended their town against the British.
