Picking up at IAH

Purple squiggle

Pickup & return areas at IAH

Land and breeze past the airport rental car center. Once you've grabbed your bags, head to the designated garage for your terminal (A, B, C, D, or E) or hop on the Ecopark rental car shuttle bus — your host will confirm the exact garage, level, and stall number via the Turo app. If you've arranged an in-person handoff, meet at Terminal A's Ride App pickup zone (Door A-114) for a quick five-minute curbside exchange. Either way, you'll likely be on the road before most travelers have even found the rental counter line.

Communicate with your host

Once your trip is booked, all the info you need lives in your Turo inbox on the app. Your host will share everything from stall numbers to lockbox codes, and real-time location sharing kicks in two hours before your trip starts. This is extremely handy for any flight delays or if your plans happen to change. Just check in, unlock your rental car, and message your host if you need anything along the way.

Parking & airport fees

George Bush Airport charges a delivery fee for each car delivered on airport property. But you don't have to worry since Turo only collects this fee on their behalf and passes it directly to the airport without any markups. If your host needs you to pay for parking, that cost will be clearly listed in your trip details so there are no hidden fees, or limit surprises — just full transparency from booking to drop-off.

Why rent a car at the airport on Turo?

" "

Contactless check-in and checkout

Many hosts offer contactless check-in and checkout, if their car has remote access technology, allowing you to find the car, unlock it, and be on your way without meeting them in person. Message your host for specific instructions.

" "

Convenient airport car rental pickup and return

Rather than hustling at the busy terminal curbside, take your time picking up the rental car at approved parking lots or garages. Check in, load up your luggage, and get comfortable with the car without a big rush.

" "

Relax with support & damage protection

24/7 support and roadside assistance mean help is just a call away, plus you can choose from a range of protection plans.

Top tips for renting a car in Houston

Houston spans nearly 700 square miles. That's a lot of ground to cover without your own set of wheels. Whether you're cruising to a conference downtown or chasing taco trucks across different neighborhoods, here's everything you'll need to know before hitting the road.

How does airport pickup work at George Bush Intercontinental Airport?

Once you land, skip the rental car center and open the Turo app to find your rental car's exact location. It'll be waiting in one of the terminal garages (A, B, C, D, or E) or one of the two ecopark lots nearby. Use the parking ticket your host left inside the vehicle, unlock via the app, and you're off. If you've arranged an in-person hand-off, make your way to Terminal A's Ride App pickup zone at Door A-114 for a quick curbside exchange in under 5 minutes.

How does drop-off work at George Bush Intercontinental Airport?

A car rental return is just as easy on Turo. Park in the approved garage or ecopark lot discussed with your host, pull a new ticket, and leave it in the car. Once that's done, lock up, and message your host with the final location (row and stall included). Most returns are super quick, with no need for shuttles, crowded rental car facility counters, or unwanted surprises.

How far is George Bush Intercontinental Airport from Downtown Houston?

IAH is roughly 20 miles from the city center, so budget around 25–30 minutes to get there, depending on traffic. Whether you're headed to a rooftop happy hour or a Rockets game, you'll be city-bound before the airport buzz even wears off.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Houston?

Driving in Houston means keeping your wits (and your wipers) about you. Speed limits on city streets usually sit at around 30 miles per hour (mph), while freeways allow for speeds of up to 60–70 mph. Houston weather can change at a moment's notice, especially in summer, when flash floods hit low-lying areas. If the rain starts pouring, find higher ground and wait it out — locals know better than to test a waterlogged shortcut.

Texas is strict about phone use behind the wheel, so make sure your phone is mounted or paired via Bluetooth, as a ticket for texting and driving can set you back quite a bit. And don't be surprised by fast merges or last-second exits; Houston traffic has a rhythm of its own, especially during the rush hour loop.

Also, watch for wildlife on the city's edges. In wooded suburbs near Lake Houston or George Bush Park, it's not uncommon to see deer near the road at dawn or dusk. Give them space because they don't care about your ETA.

What is parking like in Houston?

Downtown garages along Clay Street, Capitol Street, and near the Hobby Center are great spots if you're catching a show or grabbing dinner. If you're heading to a game or a concert at the Toyota Center, the Avenida North garage is a solid choice — it's close enough to walk to but far enough to beat the exit rush. If you're headed to Montrose or the Museum District, then you'll want to stick to parking around streets like Westheimer Road, Alabama Street, or along Binz Street.

Are there toll roads in Houston?

Yes, and they crisscross the region like a giant loop-de-loop. The Hardy Toll Road, Sam Houston Tollway, Westpark Tollway, and Katy Managed Lanes are some of the big names to watch for. Make sure to discuss any toll charges with your host before your trip so you won't be left with any unwanted surprises.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Houston?

Gas stations are everywhere, especially along major routes like JFK Boulevard near Houston Airport. You'll also find plenty of reliable options on Montrose Boulevard, Washington Avenue, and near The Galleria on Westheimer Road.

Driving electric? Houston's got you covered. You'll find chargers located along Rusk Street, Dallas Street, and Austin Street, while hotels like The Marriott and Post Oak Hotel also offer EV charging for their guests.

Do I need to rent a car in Houston?

Yes, without question! Houston isn't just big — it's Texas big. With nearly 700 square miles of neighborhoods, food trucks, museums, and bayou trails to explore, a rental car isn't just helpful, it's essential. Turo gives you the flexibility to book a vehicle that fits your plans, whether you're cruising out to NASA, chasing the city's best brisket, or fitting in five meetings across five zip codes.

You won't need to rely on surge-priced rideshares or wait around for a train that only runs a fraction of the city. Instead, if you get your own wheels, your own schedule, and the freedom to explore every corner of Houston exactly the way you want.
