Top tips for renting a car in Reading

From one-way systems to town centre traffic, navigating Reading is easier when you know what to expect. Here’s a quick guide to help you plan your journey, avoid common hiccups, and make the most of your car hire experience.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Reading?

Reading’s road network moves through a mix of urban bustle and countryside calm, with the A33, A329, and IDR (Inner Distribution Road) serving as the city’s key arteries. Peak hour congestion builds on these roads, especially during weekday mornings and late afternoons near the Oracle and Forbury Road. As always across England, drive on the left-hand side and expect a default speed limit of 30 mph in urban areas, unless otherwise posted.

When it rains, which it often does, visibility drops and roads can become slick, especially around underpasses like those on Rose Kiln Lane. During winter, icy mornings are common, so extra caution is advised on rural stretches west of the city. Be aware that some parts of Reading are subject to variable speed limit zones, particularly near schools and high-footfall neighbourhoods.

Drivers should also stay alert in and around the city centre, where pedestrian activity is high and cyclists share the roads. Many Reading locations also have parking time limits, so pay close attention to posted signs to avoid a fine.

What is parking like in Reading?

You’ll find plenty of parking in central Reading, particularly around Broad Street Mall, Queens Road, and the Oracle Riverside. The Reading Station multi-storey and Garrard Street car parks are also popular for quick trips into town or extended stays. Spaces can fill fast on weekends, so it's worth checking availability ahead of time through local council sites or apps.

Outside the city, street parking becomes easier to access, especially in quieter residential areas. Keep in mind that some car parks are subject to time restrictions, and you may need to pay using your phone or card at kiosks.

Are there toll roads in Reading?

There are no toll roads in Reading itself. However, if your travels take you toward London or major motorways like the M25, be mindful of congestion charges or dart crossings.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Reading?

Fuel is easy to come by, with petrol stations along Bath Road, Oxford Road, and Basingstoke Road. For electric vehicles, EV chargers are dotted across the town, including dedicated spots at the Oracle, Madejski Stadium, and near Caversham. With many chargers located near hotels and shopping hubs, Reading is a great place to rent an EV on Turo.

Do I need to rent a car in Reading?

Many of Reading’s top sights, like the Museum of English Rural Life and walks through the Chilterns, are best reached by car. Whether you're zipping between neighbourhoods, heading to the capital or exploring nearby villages, having your own rental gives you the freedom to travel on your schedule. And with a great range of vehicles to book on Turo, you can reserve exactly what you need, whenever you need it.
