Things to do and places to see in Canberra, ACT

Canberra offers more than just politics and neatly trimmed lawns (though yes, there are plenty of those). You’ve got national landmarks, lakeside walks, and enough galleries to make you feel vaguely cultured for the day. Add in wide streets, fresh air, and surprisingly good coffee, and you’ve got a city that’s easy to explore — and an easy base for a road trip to Sydney or a run down to the coast at Wollongong.

Australian War Memorial

The Australian War Memorial is one of those places that quietly commands your attention the moment you arrive. It’s part museum, part memorial, and entirely worth your time, with exhibitions that are detailed without being overwhelming. Give yourself a few hours (rushing it feels a bit wrong), and take it all in at your own pace. Easy to reach with a rental car in Canberra, and even easier to linger longer than planned.

Parliament House

Parliament House sits on Capital Hill and is open to the public, making it one of the most accessible government buildings in Canberra. Inside, you can visit public galleries, explore exhibitions, and get a closer look at how Australia’s political system operates. The rooftop lawn is a must, offering sweeping views across the city and a surprisingly good spot for a quiet moment. It’s an easy addition to your Canberra itinerary when you’ve got your own wheels.

National Gallery of Australia

If you’re in the mood to slow things down, the National Gallery of Australia is a solid choice. You’ll find everything from iconic Australian works to contemporary pieces that make you stop and think. The sculpture garden by the Molonglo River is worth a wander too, especially on a clear afternoon. It’s the kind of place where you pop in for an hour and somehow emerge much later.

Pick up and drop off was easy enough. Noor was always super responsive and helpful to messages before and during trip. Car interior was clean, exterior wasn’t clean and had to give windscreen a decent clean. Car served the purpose of getting around and was good on fuel efficiency, wasn’t a full tank on pick up and only 3/4 but returned with the same amount.
