Adelaide city centre in South Australia

Choose your own adventure in Adelaide

Adelaide may be one of Australia’s smaller capitals, but the city is big on things to see, do, eat, drink, and explore. There’s something for everyone here, from restaurants, bars, museums, and galleries to beaches, bushland, and bustling retail hubs.

Inside the city you’ll find some of the most famed SA destinations like Rundle Mall, Adelaide Central Market, and Glenelg Beach, but if you venture outside (and we highly recommend you do) you can explore world-famous wine regions such as the Barossa Valley, dramatic coastline, and wildlife wonderlands.

Adelaide favourites

There’s so much on offer in Adelaide, we guarantee it’ll be a struggle fitting it all in.

Adelaide Parklands

The Adelaide Parklands span an incredible 7,600,000 square metres, making them Australia’s biggest urban park system. Within the Parklands’ bounds, enjoy walking and cycling trails, the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, Adelaide Zoo, and Adelaide Oval — where you can take a roof climb for unspoiled views of Adelaide city.

Glenelg Beach

Adelaide is full of gorgeous beaches, but Glenelg might be one of the best. The water is calm and ideal for swimmers of all abilities, and around the beach there’s no shortage of things to do: dining at one of the many restaurants along Jetty Road, sipping a cocktail on the sand at Moseley Beach Club, or walking along the foreshore and soaking up the scenery.

Mad March

There’s a reason South Australia is known as the ‘festival state’. Adelaide is home to an excellent roster of annual festivals like WOMADelaide, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival, and Adelaide Writers’ Festival, all of which take place in March. If you’re an arts and culture nut, this is definitely the best time of year to visit

Hit the road

The rest of South Australia is truly ripe for a driving adventure. Much like its capital, the state offers something to suit all tastes — including red desert, blue ocean, rolling hills, small towns, rugged coastline, wildlife, and wineries that make some of the nicest drops in the world. And the best part is, Adelaide is a great base for trips, so almost all of the region’s top destinations are within driving distance.

Barossa Valley

The Barossa Valley is a must-visit. Packed with world-famous wineries, cellar doors, and places to try local produce — and less than an hour away from Adelaide — the area makes for an excellent day or overnight trip. If you’re planning to taste a few drops at different wineries, just make sure you appoint a designated driver.

Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island may be off the South Australian coast, but you can actually take your car over via ferry. Once you’re there, check out the wonderful array of wildlife — kangaroos, echidnas, dolphins, sea lions, and birds — and the spectacular natural environment.

Adelaide Hills

If you’re looking for a fun day trip, wind your way through the Adelaide Hills. The region is filled with cute villages, wineries, farms, and excellent driving roads with plenty of twists and turns. Highlights include the towns of Hahndorf and Stirling, and the views from Mount Lofty Summit.

Best Adelaide driving roads

Purple squiggle

Gorge Road

Situated between Adelaide city and the Adelaide Hills, Gorge Road is one of those fantastic routes that combines excellent driving and even better terrain. The road has a nice mix of sweeping bends and tight turns that meander through bushland and steep cliff faces, plus gradual inclines and declines that offer sublime views.

Cape Bauer Loop

Cape Bauer Road loops its way around the Streaky Bay Peninsula, which sits in a section of the Great Australian Bight. Naturally, you can expect a gorgeous display here, packed with rocky coastal cliffs, ocean as far as the eye can see, and plenty of local wildlife. The drive is one-to-two hours in total, but prepare to stop for lots of photo opps along the way.

Bunyeroo Road

If you’re a fan of off-roading, find a 4WD rental company and venture out to Bunyeroo Road — about a five-hour drive from Adelaide. The road winds through the Flinders Ranges and has views of Wilpena Pound, Brachina Gorge, and Bunyeroo Valley, all of which date back hundreds of millions of years. A 4WD is recommended.v nbvnmnbm
