A mid-size sedan is suitable for most urban driving and offers good fuel efficiency for exploring the area. However, if you plan to venture into the nearby mountains or tackle rougher terrain, an SUV might be a better choice. These vehicles provide better ground clearance and stability, especially during occasional winter weather. For summer trips, a convertible could be enjoyable for scenic drives. When driving a rental car around the Atlanta metro area, including Marietta, it's important to be aware of the toll road system. The main toll road is the I-85 Express Lanes, which uses a variable pricing model based on traffic congestion. To use these lanes, you'll need a Peach Pass transponder. Many rental cars may not come equipped with one, so it's crucial to clarify this with your vehicle provider beforehand. If your rental doesn't have a transponder, it's best to avoid the express lanes to prevent unexpected fees. Always keep some cash on hand for any unforeseen toll situations. Being prepared will ensure a smoother driving experience around Marietta and the greater Atlanta area.
While Marietta is generally driver-friendly, there are a few situations to be mindful of when operating a rental car. The historic Marietta Square can get congested, especially during events or weekends, requiring extra patience and attention. Some older neighborhoods have narrow streets with limited visibility, so drive cautiously in these areas. During rush hours, major thoroughfares like Cobb Parkway and Roswell Road can experience heavy traffic. Be prepared for occasional merging challenges on I-75, particularly near the I-285 interchange. Additionally, sudden summer thunderstorms can create temporarily hazardous driving conditions, so always be ready to adjust your driving accordingly when exploring Marietta and its surroundings.
Marietta offers numerous conveniently located gas stations along its major routes, ensuring you can easily refuel your rental car. Cobb Parkway, one of the main thoroughfares, features several options including well-known chains. You'll find multiple stations near the intersection of Roswell Road and Johnson Ferry Road, a central area for many Marietta travelers. For those exploring the historic downtown, there are fuel options just off the Marietta Square. If you're using I-75, you'll find gas stations at most exits within the Marietta city limits. It's always a good idea to plan ahead and refuel when your tank is about a quarter full, especially if you're embarking on longer trips outside the Marietta area.
Driving safely in Marietta during heavy rainfall or thunderstorms requires extra caution, especially if you're in an unfamiliar rental car. Always reduce your speed and increase your following distance to allow for longer stopping times. Use your headlights to improve visibility, but avoid using high beams which can reflect off the rain and reduce visibility. Be particularly careful on curves and when approaching intersections. Marietta's roads can become slippery when wet, so avoid sudden braking or sharp turns. If you encounter standing water, don't attempt to drive through if you're unsure of its depth. Stay alert for potential hydroplaning, especially on highways like I-75. If conditions become too severe, find a safe place to pull over and wait out the storm.
