Race to explore Indianapolis

Best known for the Indy 500, Indianapolis is a bustling city with its own unique vibe. Sports and arts fans alike will find something to love in this cultural hub nicknamed the Crossroads of America.

Indianapolis has so many amazing sights, you’ll have to race to see them all: a renowned art museum, a historic canal, a famous mall, the world’s largest children museum, and, of course, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Indianapolis favorites

The busy city of Indianapolis is a treasure trove of adventures to enjoy during your business trip or family vacation.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Site of the Indianapolis 500, this 2.5-mile speedway is also used for NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 Race and the Red Bull Indianapolis GP. First used as a racecourse in 1911, it now accommodates more than 400,000 spectators.

Monument Circle

Not far from Indianapolis’ city center is Monument Circle: home to several impressive monuments and memorials. The 1902 Soldier’s and Sailor’s Memorial commemorates those who died in the Civil War, while the Mausoleum and Memorial Hall houses sculptures honoring the city’s past leaders.

Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

The largest children’s museum in the world is famous for its dinosaur collection. The Dinosphere recreates the sights and sounds of prehistoric times, allowing you to experience the world of the dinosaurs. Of course, there are also exhibits about space, science, archaeology, and much more.

Marengo Cave

Marengo Cave is a little over two hours from Indianapolis, but it’s well worth the trip. In this jaw-dropping, naturally formed cave, you can marvel at stalactites and stalagmites, take a 40- or 60-minute tour, and mine for gemstones.

Brown County State Park

If you travel to Indianapolis in the fall, the gorgeous colors of this park are a must-see. But the park is beautiful at all times of the year, with hiking, swimming, horseback riding, and even a water park to keep you busy.

South Bend

This charming, historic town is home to Notre Dame University, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Studebaker Museum, and the Oliver Mansion. A destination for history buffs and Fighting Irish fans, South Bend is full of quaint streets and eclectic shops.

Best Indianapolis driving roads

Purple squiggle

West 56th Street

In Northwest Indianapolis, West 56th Street is a peaceful drive along Eagle Creek Park and the reservoir, with beautiful green views. Just watch out for wildlife: you may spot a racoon or deer as you cruise.

Burgess and Downey Avenues

Forget interstate highways — these curvy avenues run through Indy’s historic Irvington district, so take it slow and make sure to stop at the Benton House. This impressive 19th century mansion is one of the city’s most photographed sites.

Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway

This famous byway is a bit of a drive from Indianapolis, but it’s full of unforgettable sights and beautiful historic structures. Travel this 67-mile road to see the old canal, defunct railroad, and Ohio River.
