Top tips for renting a car in Poole

Renting a car in Poole gives you the flexibility to explore the stunning Jurassic Coast, Poole Harbour and other nearby attractions. Here’s what you need to know before you get behind the wheel of your car or van hire in Poole.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Poole?

Driving in Poole follows the same road rules as the rest of the UK. You must drive on the left-hand side, wear seatbelts at all times and observe posted speed limits. Avoid using a mobile phone while driving to prevent fines and stay safe. Be mindful at roundabouts, pedestrian crossings and junctions, especially during peak hours when traffic builds near Poole town centre and coastal roads. Streets in the Old Town are often narrow, so take extra care when navigating. Weather conditions can change quickly along the coast, so stay alert. Understanding local traffic signs, parking rules, and road conditions will help you enjoy a smooth and stress-free driving experience while exploring Dorset and the surrounding South Coast.

What is parking like in Poole?

Parking in Poole is generally easy, with a mix of metered street spaces and large public car parks around the town. However, spots near popular attractions such as Poole Quay and Poole Park can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays. Many parking areas offer hourly or daily rates, and some allow short stays for free. Along the coast, including Sandbanks Beach and the harbour, you may find restricted or time-limited zones, so always check local signage. Public car parks are often the most convenient choice for visitors exploring several attractions in one day. Parking tends to be easier during off-peak hours or in quieter residential streets outside the main town centre.

Are there toll roads in Poole?

No, there are no major toll roads directly within Poole. Those renting a car or van on Turo can enjoy driving in the surrounding areas along the South Coast and the New Forest National Park without encountering any tolls. However, if you venture further east towards London, you may encounter toll bridges or congestion zones, so it’s worth checking your route in advance.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Poole?

Poole has a good network of petrol stations throughout the town and along major routes. Fuel types include standard unleaded and diesel fuels, as well as premium grades at select stations. Electric vehicle (EV) chargers are increasingly available at public car parks, shopping centres and near popular attractions, supporting both fast and standard charging. Many hotels and supermarkets in Poole also provide on-site charging points, making it easy to top up your vehicle while you shop, dine or stay overnight.

Do I need to rent a car in Poole?

Renting a car in Poole is a smart idea if you don't already have access to wheels of your own. While Poole has bus services and train connections to nearby towns, having a car or van allows you to visit the surrounding Dorset countryside, Jurassic Coast and hidden coastal spots. With a car hire, you can visit multiple attractions in a single day, carry luggage or sports equipment, and travel efficiently to nearby destinations such as Bournemouth, Swanage or New Forest National Park.
