Top tips for renting a car in Belfast

Hiring a car in Belfast is one of the best ways to explore the city, countryside, and coastlines at your own pace. Here’s what you need to know before you hit the road:

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Belfast?

In Belfast and across Northern Ireland, you’ll need to drive on the left and follow standard UK road signs. Speed limits are shown in miles per hour, and dual carriageways are common. Traffic can build up around the city centre, so it’s worth giving yourself a bit of extra time.

Whether you’re after a compact car, an electric vehicle, or a van hire, Turo gives you the freedom to choose what suits your trip. Northern Ireland’s mix of urban roads, coastal routes, and scenic countryside makes it a great place to explore at your own pace.

What is parking like in Belfast?

Parking in Belfast is generally manageable, though it can be tight near popular spots like the Cathedral Quarter, St George’s Market, or around Belfast Castle. You’ll usually find more space just outside the busy areas, and it’s worth checking side streets or less touristy zones for easier parking.

Street parking in the city centre is mostly metered, with time limits during weekday business hours. Outside the centre, parking tends to be more flexible. Public car parks in Belfast are well distributed across the city and offer reasonable rates for both short and long stays.

Are there toll roads in Belfast?

The good news is there are no toll roads in Belfast or anywhere in Northern Ireland, so you can enjoy your road trip without worrying about extra driving costs. Whether you’re heading up the Sydenham Bypass or out to County Antrim, all major routes are toll-free, making car hire more affordable.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Belfast?

Yes, Belfast has a good network of petrol stations and an increasing number of EV chargers across the city. Fast-charging points are available near the city centre, at major public car parks, and along main roads. If you’re hiring an electric vehicle in Belfast, it’s easy to stay charged during your trip.

Do I need to rent a car in Belfast?

While public transport covers much of the city, car hire in Belfast gives you more freedom. If you’re planning to visit attractions outside the city — like Castle Ward or the Peace Bridge in Derry — hiring a car on Turo makes the journey simpler, especially for day trips or longer drives.
