If you're considering car hire, Aberdeen Airport is located 7 miles, typically a 15 to 20 minute drive, from Aberdeen city centre.
Driving in Aberdeen follows the standard UK rules, so it’s all very familiar if you’ve driven here before. You’ll be on the left-hand side, with speed limits clearly posted: 20–30 mph in built-up areas, 60 mph on most single carriageways, and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways.
Aberdeen’s winter weather can be unpredictable, so a little extra caution goes a long way. Ice, fog, and slick roads are common in the early morning or on rural stretches. Slowing down, leaving more space between you and the car ahead, and popping on dipped headlights when visibility drops will keep you safe
Finding a parking spot in Aberdeen is easy. You’ll find plenty of convenient options right in the city centre. Popular car parks like Gallowgate, Frederick Street, Denburn, and Virginia Street are all run by Aberdeen City Council and sit within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, and major attractions.
For longer stays, many visitors choose Union Square Car Park, which is operated by the centre itself and offers a substantial number of parking spaces.
In addition, If you don’t mind parking a little further out, the council also provides several free car parks in suburbs like Bucksburn, Cults, and Woodside, which can be very useful.
No, there are no toll roads in Aberdeen or anywhere else in Scotland.
You will find petrol stations and EV chargers scattered conveniently across Aberdeen. Most of the public charging points operate 24/7 in the city centre — this includes Polmuir Road, Gallowgate car park, West North Street car park, and Craibstone Park and Ride.
At the same time, petrol stations in Aberdeen are located along major routes like the A92, A96, and Anderson Drive, as well as near retail parks and supermarkets such as Tesco, Asda, and Sainsbury’s.
Aberdeen’s city centre may be easy to explore on foot, but a car opens up far more of what makes the region special. Public transport is available, yet relying on buses and trains can limit how freely you explore Aberdeen and the stunning landscapes beyond. With so many remarkable places nearby — Aberdeen's sweeping coastlines, Dunnottar Castle, or even nearby cities like Dundee, Inverness, or Edinburgh — it’s the best way to make the most of your visit. And if you’re up for an adventure, the mountainous drive towards Cairngorms National Park is worth the journey alone.
