What are the road rules and driving conditions in Courtenay?

Driving in Courtenay is relaxed, but you need to follow standard Canadian road rules. That means keeping to the right-hand side, obeying posted speed limits and always wearing seatbelts. Some roads feel narrower along Highway 19A and on rural routes outside town. Weather conditions can change quickly, with rain or fog affecting visibility. Wildlife crossings are common near forested areas, particularly early in the morning or at dusk. Roads are generally well maintained, but attentive driving helps ensure a smooth trip.

What is parking like in Courtenay?

Parking in Courtenay is fairly easy to manage, especially around the town centre and public facilities. Downtown streets often have metered or time-limited parking, with public lots available for longer stays. During peak travel periods, spaces near popular trails and event venues can fill up quickly. Some residential areas have parking restrictions, so it’s worth checking local signs before leaving your vehicle. Many parks and trailheads also provide dedicated parking areas with clearly posted rules.

Are there toll roads in Courtenay?

There are no toll roads in Courtenay or elsewhere on Vancouver Island, so you don't need to budget for road fees. Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Courtenay?

Gas stations and EV chargers are available throughout Courtenay, but they're not as frequent as in major urban centres. How can drivers prepare for potentially challenging weather conditions while exploring Vancouver Island by car?

When renting a car to explore Vancouver Island, it's crucial to be prepared for varying weather conditions. Pack appropriate clothing layers and ensure your rental car is equipped with all-season or winter tires, depending on the season. Familiarize yourself with the vehicle's features, such as windshield wipers and defrosting systems. Keep an eye on local weather forecasts and road condition reports before embarking on your journey. In rainy conditions, which are common on the island, reduce your speed and increase following distances. For winter driving, consider renting an SUV or vehicle with all-wheel drive for better traction on snowy or icy roads. Always carry a charged mobile phone and inform someone of your travel plans when venturing into more remote areas of the island.
