Top tips for renting a truck in Edmonton

Driving a truck in Edmonton is generally easy, especially with a little preparation. If you’re not used to a larger vehicle, spending a few minutes practising in a quieter area or parking lot can help you get comfortable with turning, braking, and parking before heading into busier traffic. If you’re planning to rent during weekends, holidays, or peak moving periods, booking ahead can also help you secure the truck size and features you need.

What is parking a truck like in Edmonton?

Parking a truck in Edmonton is typically easy, thanks to wider roads, larger parking bays, and plenty of open lots across the city. Outside the centre, you’ll usually have more space to manoeuvre, which takes the pressure off when driving a bigger vehicle.

Closer to downtown, spots can feel tighter, so it helps to take your time and allow extra room when turning or parking. Although in winter, snow and ice can make things a little trickier.

How to choose the right type of truck for your Edmonton trip

Choosing the right vehicle type comes down to what you need to carry, how much space you’ll need, and your personal preferences. Whether you’re moving, transporting equipment, or just need extra room, thinking about size and capacity upfront makes the decision much easier.

From full-size pickup trucks like the GMC Sierra 1500 to midsize options like the Nissan Frontier, alongside cargo vans, moving trucks, and box trucks, there’s something to suit every kind of job on Turo. Picking the right vehicle means you’ll have the space you need without overcomplicating things.

Loading a truck

If you’re loading up a rental truck with furniture, equipment, or anything oversized, a bit of planning goes a long way. Position heavier items close to the cab and spread the weight evenly to keep the vehicle balanced on the road.

For larger or awkward pieces, use straps or ties to hold everything in place and stop it from shifting while you drive. Adding blankets or padding can also help protect both your belongings and the truck.

Gas stations and EV chargers in Edmonton

Gas stations are scattered across Edmonton, particularly along major routes like Yellowhead Trail and Gateway Boulevard, as well as in suburban areas and near highways, with many open late or 24/7. If you’re renting a larger truck, it’s worth checking the fuel type, as diesel is widely available but not offered at every station.

EV charging is also largely available, most commonly in shopping centres, public parking lots, and recreation areas, with faster chargers found along highways and main roads. However, it’s worth checking that the charger suits your vehicle and that the location has enough space for a larger truck.
