If you have extra time, consider visiting Salem, OR to explore local museums and see the Oregon State Capitol.
One of the best ways to explore Portland, especially with kids, is to visit beautiful Washington Park. You'll also find the Hoyt Arboretum, a 'living museum' packed with over 1,000 species of plants, and the Portland Japanese Garden, a calming testament to the city's post-World War II cultural ties to Sapporo, within this 410-acre green space.

No lingering at the rental car center needed; coordinating your vehicle on Turo is quick and convenient. Here are some top tips for organizing your car rental from Portland International Airport.
If you're looking to scoot around Portland in a reliable car, Portland Intl Airport is the perfect pickup location. Coordinate your desired rental car and pickup time in the Turo app when you book your car. Then, after you land, head to one of the approved pickup locations at Portland International Airport — the P2, P3, or Economy Parking Lots — refer to the Turo app for everything you need to know prior to your arrival.
When you leave PDX, drop off your Portland Airport car rental at one of our approved locations and let your host know where they can retrieve their vehicle. You'll need to obtain a parking ticket when you enter the parking garage, and leave it in the car so your host can exit. Be sure to only return your car rental at the P2, P3, or Economy Parking Lots at Portland International Airport.
The trip from Portland International Airport to downtown Portland can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes by car, depending on traffic. Thankfully, with Turo, you can grab your Portland Airport car rental from one of our approved pickup locations and be on your way to the big city in no time.
In Portland, you must adhere to Oregon road rules, including following speed limits, wearing a seatbelt at all times, yielding to emergency vehicles, and staying below a blood alcohol level of 0.08%.
Oregonian speed limits are relatively conservative: 20 miles per hour (mph) in business districts and school zones, 25 mph in residential areas, 55–65 mph on rural and urban highways, and 70 mph on interstates.
U-turns are only legal in Oregon at intersections with no stop lights — they are illegal in all other scenarios, including at stop lights. Drivers in Portland should always give way to pedestrians and bicyclists, even if there is no crosswalk. You must not use your phone while driving in Portland unless it is hands-free.
In the Pacific Northwest, weather can be very rainy and occasionally unpredictable. Always use headlights in low visibility and take precautions to stay safe while driving in the rain.
There are many parking garage locations throughout the city of Portland, however, rates can be high so keep an eye out for that. Suburban parking in Portland is much more accessible and street parking is readily available in most locations.
If you do park your car in downtown Portland, always exercise the same level of caution as you would in any metro area. Be sure to remove all your personal belongings from the vehicle before leaving it.
There are no toll roads in Portland, so you won't have to worry about navigating these! If you do decide to head out of Portland, there are two toll roads in Oregon — the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge and the Bridge of the Gods, both of which connect Oregon to its northern neighbor, Washington. It is possible to drive from Oregon to Washington without crossing a toll road, so this is your best bet if you'd like to save money.
There are many gas stations in the city of Portland and its surrounding suburbs. While your rental car will be ready to go with a full tank of gas, there are also a handful of gas stations in all driving directions from Portland International Airport should you need them. Try one of the ones along or near NE Grand Ave.
Portland is an incredibly eco-friendly city, so it's no surprise you'll find electric vehicle (EV) chargers all over at locations including parking garages, stations, and hotels. If your car is in dire need of a charge, you'll find plenty littered between SW Clay St and SW Alder St.
While renting a car in Portland isn't essential, it will be helpful if you're looking to explore Portland without limitations. Downtown Portland is well-serviced by public transport, but getting from city to city or interstate to Washington or California can prove difficult without your own transportation.
A rental car on Turo can also give you peace of mind once you arrive at Portland International Airport. Unlike other car rental companies, with Turo, you can skip the rental counter and head straight from the baggage claim area to your vehicle with no fuss.
In Portland, you can be exactly who you want to be — and that includes driving your perfect rental car. Cars on Turo run the gamut of vehicle classes, from full-size luxury SUVs and electric luxury sedans to pickup trucks and everything in between.
Try on a full-size luxury sedan like the Acura Integra or the Chrysler 200 for size, and enjoy zipping around Portland's best sights. Or maybe a midsize sport luxury sedan like the BMW 5 Series or Audi A6, might tickle your fancy instead.
If you're traveling with the family, an electric luxury SUV like the Chevrolet Bolt or Tesla Model Y will help you get from A to B in style. We've also got sports cars, convertibles, SUVs, people movers, premium luxury sedans, and so much more available on Turo.
The cost of car rental in Portland can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Portland, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.
