Oakland International Airport is approximately 9.3 miles from Downtown Oakland. The drive typically takes around 14 minutes, which makes it a quick and easy cruise to the city center.
Driving in Oakland can be challenging if you're not used to driving around big cities. Traffic congestion is the biggest factor to take into account if you're taking freeways or using the roads during rush hour. If you need to take the Bay Bridge at any time in the morning, it's best to allow extra time to get where you're going, as traffic can build up easily here during rush hour.
It's best to be vigilant of other drivers, as Oakland has a reputation for dangerous driving. Making sure you're following all traffic rules and driving to the conditions can make your cruise around Oakland smooth and stress-free.
As always, obey local speed limits, wear a seatbelt, and only operate your phone hands-free while you're driving.
Finding a park for your rental car in Oakland can be relatively straightforward, but it's best to allow extra time to find a park at your destination. With metered parking and parking garages, there's a range of options to choose from. Downtown Oakland mainly offers metered parking, but make sure you check the time limits as these can vary from street to street.
If you'd rather park your rental vehicle in a parking garage, choose from the Pacific Renaissance Plaza Parking Garage on 9th Street, or the City Center Garage on 14th Street. If you're visiting Lake Merritt, there are some un-metered spots, but make sure you get there early to secure one.
Yes, Oakland has a toll bridge. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge connects Oakland and San Francisco, so if you're taking a day trip to San Francisco, this is something to keep in mind.
Oakland offers ample gas stations for you to keep your adventure fueled. Pump your gas at ARCO on West Grand Avenue, GO! on High Street, or ARCO on Park Boulevard.
If you're driving an electric vehicle, there are plenty of EV chargers to charge your rental car. Charge up at the Revel Fast Charging on Erie Street, the EVgo Charging Station on Washington Street, or the EVgo Charging Station on Fruitvale Avenue.
Yes, we definitely recommend renting a car in Oakland. While Downtown Oakland is easy to get around without a car, having a car is essential for exploring the surrounding areas. If you're planning to visit the Oakland Hills for a hike or just for the view, a rental car offers freedom and flexibility to go on your own schedule. Exploring the Bay Area is also made much easier with a rental car, as you don't have to rely on public transport to get around. Stop whenever you want and soak in the views with the convenience a rental car offers.
