Beale Street

Beale Street is a critical part of the anatomy of Memphis. Stretching 1.8 miles from the Mississippi River eastbound, this legendary street – known affectionately as the Home of Blues – is steeped in history that dates back to the 1800s. Head down here for a bite with friends before taking in some local music at a bar or enjoying a live performance from the gutsy Beale Street Flippers.

Graceland

The former home and final resting place of rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley, Graceland is arguably the one attraction not to skip over on your trip to Memphis. Start by taking in the towering white-and-brick Graceland mansion, exploring the various exhibits that have been set up to commemorate Elvis's legacy inside. Before you leave, don't forget to pay your respects at the Presley plot, where Elvis and his beloved family members are buried.

National Civil Rights Museum

It's a must-visit spot for anyone visiting Memphis, as not only does it memorialize such an important moment in US history, but it recounts key events through a range of historical exhibitions. While a visit to this site may be thought-provoking and sobering, it's an important part of Memphis's fabric.

Top tips for renting a car in Memphis

Memphians march to the beat of their own drum, and the city itself is the same way. Busy, colorful, and gritty, navigating Memphis's roads can be a challenge – but a fun one, at that. Before you get behind the wheel, take in these top tips for getting around Memphis by car like a local.

How does airport pickup work at Memphis International Airport?

In Memphis, you must collect your car rental from Turo outside the Memphis International Airport grounds. Once your flight has touched down, grab your gear from the baggage claim area and head straight to a pre-arranged, off-airport pickup location where the rental vehicle will be waiting for you.

How does drop-off work at Memphis International Airport?

Ready to jet out of Memphis International Airport? Luckily, the process of dropping off your vehicle to your Turo host is extremely easy. Drive to the agreed drop-off location, return your vehicle, and make your way onto the Memphis Airport grounds to catch your flight.

How far is Memphis International Airport from Downtown Memphis?

Located south-east of the city, Memphis International Airport is roughly a 13 mile drive to downtown Memphis. Depending on the time of day and the route you choose, this could take anywhere between 20 and 30 minutes by car.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Memphis?

Roads in Memphis are extremely varied – you'll find everything from major multi-lane highways to quaint suburban streets and unmarked dirt roads here. As one of the US's busiest tourist hubs, it's important to have your wits about you while cruising through the city. Traffic can build up without warning, rush hour is long, and you'll often pass by mammoth vehicles like 18-wheelers on major roads.

First, the general road rules: always obey speed limits, observe road signage, wear a seatbelt, and avoid holding your cell phone while driving – like most other US states, Memphis upholds a "Hands-Free Law". You must always yield to emergency vehicles or stationary vehicles with their hazard lights on (the "Move Over Law") and use your turn signal to indicate which direction you're traveling. Tennessee is also home to the aptly-named "Slow Poke Law", which prohibits drivers from using the left-hand lane of traffic unless they're overtaking another car – no crawling allowed here.

Speed limits in Memphis are similar to those in other states, varying from 30 miles per hour (mph) in residential areas to 55 mph on divided roads, 65 mph on undivided roads, and 70 mph on all freeways.

While Memphis is resolutely in the South, it doesn't have the same scorching-hot weather as cities in the Deep South like Houston. In the winter, you may encounter icy roads and the occasional snowfall, so it's best to come prepared with snow chains or tires if you plan on visiting during this time. Always keep an eye on local hazard updates to avoid dangerous driving conditions or getting stranded while on the road.

What is parking like in Memphis?

Memphis is home to plentiful parking options for locals and visitors alike, including metered and free street parking, garages and open lots. In the downtown area, particularly around major attractions like Beale Street and Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, parking in a secure garage often comes at a premium. You won't be short of choice, though – there are a bunch of accessible options downtown, on major streets like Peabody Place, 2nd Street, and Union Avenue.

There are many metered street parks in the area, too, which can be a cheaper alternative to a garage. The city also operates spring and summer parking deals, so if you're visiting during this time, you may be able to snag a cheap spot for a couple of hours. Once you leave the downtown area and head into the suburbs of Memphis, you'll find more free street parking and have easier access to convenient spots.

Are there toll roads in Memphis?

Fantastic news for penny-pinchers – there are no toll roads in Memphis, nor in the entire state of Tennessee. The same goes for neighboring states, including Arkansas, Mississippi, and Missouri. Wherever's on your itinerary while in the South, you'll be able to traverse it freely from behind the wheel of your rental car with no tolls to speak of.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Memphis?

If you're looking for a hotspot to fill up your rental car, you won't have any trouble as you cruise through Memphis. It's important to note that most gas stations are not located right in the heart of downtown, but rather, in the surrounding streets like Route 79, Riverside Drive, Danny Thomas Boulevard, and E.H. Crump Boulevard. The Medical District, Winchester Park, and New Pathways neighborhoods offer tons of gas stations to choose from.

Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are abundant throughout the city of Memphis – you'll find over 260 chargers, including a number of free ones, dotted throughout the downtown area and at car dealerships, malls, and hotels. For your pick of the bunch, head to 2nd Street between Beale Street and Madison Avenue, where you'll enjoy a handful of options from major providers including Tesla and Blink. Hotels like The Peabody and Holiday Inn Express also have their own chargers for guests to use.

Do I need to rent a car in Memphis?

While Memphis's public transit infrastructure is certainly growing, with a fleet of buses and a handful of trolleys (AKA trams or streetcars), the best way to get around is in your own vehicle. Having a car rental will let you see not just the up-close, city-based sights of downtown Memphis, but also off-the-beaten-path gems like Graceland, Shelby Farms Park, and the various hiking and biking trails in the area.

Fancy a road trip to Nashville? A rental car from Turo will also give you the flexibility you need to explore more of Tennessee or even other states at your leisure.

On your next visit to Memphis, Tennessee, use Turo to explore a huge range of affordable, convenient rental cars. Have a specific, dream vehicle in mind? Odds are you'll find it on Turo! The cost of car rental in Memphis can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Memphis, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.

The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency.
